Due to all of the confusion (crazy, I know) over the mats and people still having issues with balls and strikes, the mat being too small, too big, not straight, needing to be a different color, where to touch when running home, etc.... we are going back to the old way of the umpires calling balls and strikes.

Thank you

How hard can it be? If the ball hits the matt it is a strike. That is pretty simple. The mat is not part of home plate, once again another simple answer. Why is that so hard for people to understand? It amazes me that there are so many that cant understand simple rules. There will still be complaining and in my opinion there will be more. I think that strike mats were a great idea, but once again I guess the majority get over-ruled by the minority. Thanks Dan for atleast giving the mats a try, they were working fine in my opinion. Now we will have more people arguing strikes and the games will last longer and then more people will complain about the get home late. I believe that since we started the season with the mats then we should finish the season with the mats. Well thanks again Dan and thanks for running the league. You will be missed!

Kelly, it's not so much minority over majority. It's just that it's become a huge headache and it's amazing that people just can not get on the same page. We've already gone through 5 mats because they were left out or then hung on the fences and the kids are taking them.

The one thing that people have also talked about is the length of the games with the mats. Even when I made the new ones that were bigger, there really isn't any way for the umpire to help move the games along. If a game is taking forever, they can open the strike zone up a bit. One guy was talking tonight about how it seems that mainly in Co-Ed, people get up there looking for a walk time after time. I won't swing at a pitch I don't like, but I don't LOOK for a walk. They said it's really an issue in co-ed.

Kevin, yes and noted.

If a rule is going to be changed, it should not happen in the middle of the season. That has become a trend in the Marion league and is very frustrating.

?? What other rules have been changed in the middle of the season? Please answer that for me. Nothing jumps to mind.

This was definately said during the league meetings, we said that we were going to TRY the mats this year. The argument was that if it didn't work, it could be removed. It hasn't, so they have.

In my opinion the umpire should not "open" up his strike zone to get the game moving faster. This is why we decided to get the mat in the first place. The strike zone should be consistent and should not be effected by wether or not the umpire or players need the game to end quicker. I understand that there has been alot of confusion about the mats, but that is the problem with every new rule. It takes time for people to conform to the changes. Simply changing the decision to take the mat away is a mistake in my opinion, but everyone has there own opinion. Putting the mats up should fall under the person responsible for putting up the bases. That would solve the problem with "kids" stealing the mats. I dont agree with the decision and I have already said that earlier, but I guess the decision has already been made so there is no reason to try an change anyones mind about it. I just hope that this does not create any more additional problems. Thanks again Dan.

I played in the church league last night and everyone, i mean EVERYONE was upset about the mats being taken away. Both teams were questioning calls, even FOR the other team. It leaves too much to the imagination of the umpires. These guys don't get paid enough to take crap from all the players. I think there should be a vote or something to find out what the majority wants. I believe the mats were a great idea, because they limited questionable balls and strikes and helped with collitions at the plate. They should not be taken away because a few people are "confused".

I also prefer the mats for balls and strikes...However I know there was some confusion.

What bothers me most about this whole discussion/decision is that we're supposed to be ADULTS. If an ump calls a strike, then its a strike - deal with it and move on. No umpire is perfect and some are way less than that but so what......people, its just a game. We're there to have fun.
