Rest assured there will be far more on this topic tomorrow evening as it is late, and I am tired.

Trust me there will be way more on this needed topic.

For starters here I hesitate a bit because as of now I plan to begin dabbling more in a recreational careerless in umpiring rather then flipping the ball around off the bump. Basically what that means is i do not want to piss off or disrespect any of the gentlemen I may be umpiring with in the future.

For those of you who are "BASEBALL PLAYERS/BASEBALL PEOPLE AND ONES WHO ACTUALLY GET IT, you will appreciate the fact that an actual BASEBALL GUY MAY BE FREQUENTING THE TOWN BALL YARDS NEXT YEAR WEARING A MONKEY SUIT.

For now and again trust me there will be morea on this at a later date but my old man made the comment that we should have four umpires for state tourney games. My comment to him was "Dad if we had four umps then we would have four bad umps instead of two!

There is some merit in that if you think about it and your a baseball guy, AN ACTUAL GUY WHO GETS BASEBALL.

Now are all umps bad? Certainly not but I have seen early calls, early indication of calls prior to when the play is even finished, phantom balk calls when they are not called all damn year long........i have seen fans who we all know more often then not do not know squat laugh at calls made that actually help their team...

I have seen headliner calls, I have seen umpires blow calls on plays that do not look good and take forever to develop because they were ready to make the call before the play even materialized.....

.....As a last comment on that in our game tonight against Hopkins we had what we felt was a bad call go against us....As I walked to the mound to flip the ninth I was venting to myself, never once looked up, never once looked to the plate ump on his foul line, and never once said a word that anyone could hear except myself and perhaps this particular umpire (who by the way is a solid young ump......) What happens?

He starts making his way out to the mound from his perch, gets about half way and says "hey it was a fair ball."

My first reaction was why are you coming out to me, my second was I should go off right here as I am getting ready to pitch, never even looked at you much less moved towards you and my last reaction in my own mind was to say to myself........

......there is no need for you to appraoch me in this situation...on my third warm up pitch the coaching perspective of me kicked in and I thought I should lierally get tossed just because I was approached for no reason.....I wonder what John Manganaro, Paul Blanchard or a few others would do in that situation if the plate ump approached their player like that prior to his damn warm up pitches.

Bottom line there needs to be more baseball guys who umpire and that very well could be a driving factor behind me deciding to no longer pitch and umpire.....how bad could it be, I could make calls early, call phantom balks, make headlines, screw up at the worst possible moment on a crucial play, make calls early, show calls prior to when I make them and last but not least say, "I think it hit him somewhere in here...."

Joke!!!!!!!!!! This is recreational baseball, the game does not move that fast, pitchers do not throw filthy stuff for the most part....it is not that hard.....

...is it harder then all of us think? Yes it is but I think a prequisite of umpiring town ball should be that you actually played baseball beyond a little league minors level.

To be continued.

Conley, you bring up a great point! Can't wait for the second edition...

There are way too many umpires that feel they have something to prove! We might as well play with fans as umpires.

Has Conley sobered up enough from last night to realize he posted 47 messages? Drunk posting. Loving it.

Rant regarding umpiring is on the money. For a guy who's been at it for 20 years, the umps are sadly taking the fun out of the game.

One calls a no pause balk to decide a game, and another doesn't toss a guy for throwing at a batter not even in the box. I told Veleck I was just as pissed at the blue as I was at the pitcher for not tossing him. No rationale and no justification given the circumstances. Fair, foul....frick. Take control, make the call, and get it frickin right. If you need help, talk to your partner. Learn from your mistakes? There's no learning going on. It gets worse every damn year.

Sure, we don't hit we don't win. A good game vs. Hopkins overall. But 2 calls last night could have changed the momentum and therefore the outcome. That's baseball.

I hope you're reading Shawn, and please convey this message to you colleagues.
