Special Playoff Edition “Bracketology”
Can you feel it? Can you smell it? It’s the final weekend of Fall Ball this Sunday, and the atmosphere is absolutely electric! Yeah I know that many people will say…”It’s only Sunday Morning Softball and it’s only Fall Ball”, to this I can only say this….
16 Teams, in Fall Ball, are you kidding me? This is incredible…any league that has sixteen “Die-Hard” teams that couldn’t get enough of softball during the nice weather months and are willing to freeze their asses off to get more….all I can say is that “Ya’ll are my peeps!” This is “Mertog Nation” This is an absolute kick ass league, even if we are just a bunch of “Once a week Mutha-Fuckers” Ya Feelin’ Me Yet?
I see you…I see you!
I have to say that last weekend was great and I got to meet lots of my faithful readers who made it a point to come up to me and introduce themselves to me and voice their opinions on my mindless drivel that I lovingly refer to as “Planet Mertog”. At first I was a little apprehensive to all the attention that people were giving me and when they came up to me and said…”Hey are you Mertog”, my initial response was to cringe and say: “Yes, please don’t hit me in the face…not in the face.”
I have to tell you that it all turned out pretty good and the “Mertonians” were all very friendly and offered me a lot of supportive advice and compliments. If I can be serious for one moment, I’d like to thank everyone for all the kind words and compliments, Mertog loves ya baby! So here is my shout out to all my new friends.
A+ was in the house, representing the Mertonians! (By the way…is that James Hetfield of Metallica fresh out of rehab!)
…and of course My boys from the Naaaa, were representing!

At 9:00AM Foster Field
A+ (8th Seed) vs. Precision(9th Seed): Mertog is picking A+ to take this one in a very hard fought battle against the new comers. That’s right Mert is going with my boy “Pickles” and crew. I think A+ will just have too much for Precision to handle.
Hold the Pickle and crew move on to the next round!
At Club Joques
Jr’s/VFW/Raymond (5th Seed) vs. Eaton(12th Seed): Can you say “Beat Down”? This one is going to get as ugly as this.
It’s all Jr’s in this one folks.
At Hunters
Crowe Bar(7th Seed) and PNA (10th Seed) go to war. Last year’s fall ball champs will fall to a very tough Crowe Bar. I’m going to have to go with Ricky Keenan and the boys to take down the Big Red machine. Crowe struts on to the next round.
At Washington Oak (Death Valley)
Charlies Place (6th) Takes on Baxters (11th Seed) I think this one may be one of the toughest opening round games and Baxter’s will put a scare into Charlie’s Place…but ultimately Charlie’s takes it, but not without a valiant fight!
10 AM At Fosters
PUB (1 Seed) takes on Coventry Fire (16th Seed) Sorry Firefighter’s…this isn’t going to be your day. It’s our stage….”Get the Fuck off it”
Gotta go gotta go….Pub moves on!
At Joques
Bothelo’s (4th Seed) vs. Sunset(13th Seed): This one is going to be all Bothelo’s. Ian Smith….that’s all I need to say about this one. Bothelo’s moves on!
Nice Shoes Smitty! It’s gotta be the shoes!
At Hunters
Farm Dog(2nd Seed) vs. Stallions(15th Seed): Two of my favorite teams going at it for a shot to move on….but the Dog is of the leash and going for the kill. I’m taking the dogs in this one.
At Oak
Del Padre (3rd Seed) Vs. Joques(14th Seed): Del Padre puts it on them and hard. I’m going with Del Padre all the way in this one. Padre slaps them around and moves on.
Round 2
Foster AT 11
Pub vs. A+ : I refer to Mr. Chauvette when he said Pub was a Big Fish in a small pond. To this I will respond with: “A shark is a shark no matter what waters he swims in.”
Pub devours A+ and moves on.
At Joques
Its Jr’s vs. Eaton: It was a hell of a season for Eaton, but guess what…it’s all over! The Cinderella ride ends here! Jr’s/Raymond/VFW is just too much for these guys to handle and “The All-stars” roll to victory. Over and out!
Hunters 11
Farm Dog and Crowe: I think this one may be one of the hardest to pick. Both teams are great but I give a slight edge to Crowe simply because I think Ricky Keenan will be the edge Crowe needs to get by. Don’t fuck with the bird!
At Oak
DelPadre keeps the dream alive against Baxter’s. Baxters is always the bridesmaid never the bride and the trend continues here. DelPadre has a lot of experience after hooking up with some of the guys from Moulton and could be the surprise team in the playoffs. No celebration for Baxters! DelPadre moves on!
Round 3
At Foster’s High Noon!
The Game of the day, and of the entire playoffs will be between the Pub and Jr’s/Raymond’s/VFW! I personally believe the winner of this game will take the entire thing! It’s going to be an absolute war and slugfest. Both teams can play and both teams can bomb away. It’s just going to be a bloody mess. Who will win it? Well I have to stay true to my tradition this fall and put my faith behind my boys and pick the Pub in a squeaker.
At Hunters
Crowe vs. DelPadre…yet another war will be settled here. It’s going to be a hard fought battle between two very good teams, but once again I have to give the edge to Crowe. Crowe moves on to the Championship.
Championship Game Foster Field
Now this is what it is all about, Pub and Crowe squaring off to take the coveted crown of Sunday Morning Once a Week Mutha Fuckers! Ya gotta love it. During the regular course of the fall ball season, Crowe was the only team to hand the Pub a loss, they are a great all around team and can beat anyone on any given day. However, Pub is going to “Shake Shit Up” like Shakira!
Uh, what was I saying again? Damn that girl can move!
Oh yeah, Pub wins and takes the trophy home for the first time since the 70”s!
Oh and I want my pat on the butt!
Then it is off to the PNA to help my boy Mac dispose of a few beers!

| Right Lawnman...Mert forgot to predict JRs over Botelhos! ( He has JRs going to the finals, so that must be his choice). THE MATCH of the Fall. Think of the history. It was Botelhos/Prata Bar that took out JRs in Summer 2005, JRS who STOMPED Botelhos for the 2005 Fall Championship, Botelhos that took out VFW this summer and now the whole Artie/Ian drama...Mert..come on..lets analyze THIS. By the way, whoever is batting BEHIND Ricky Keenan is the key to the predicted Farm Dog/ Crowe Bar game ( I see PNA taking Crowe out personally )....that guy will be batting with Ricky on first base every time...if you catch my drift. After watching RK hit 375 bombs at the HR derby..how can I let him take a swing with runners on?

| Holy Shit and Mother of Weapons of Mass Destruction, I did forget that crucial matchup between Jr's/VFW/Raymond and Bothelo's. However, I did have Jr's taking that one in a war against Bothelo's. Bothelo's is an excellent team, but I just think that Dutilly has a friggen "All Star" team over at Raymond's. I realize that Bothelo's has accomplished all those things that were mentioned but this Fall Ball team that Jr's has is absolutely sick. Mac, Lemme, Ernie Wright, Chachie, Pete Ianelli, Jay Johnstone, Dutilly, Rob Raymond (who personally has 800 years of experience)it's a sick lineup.
As for a strategy for Farm Dog against Keenan and Crew....there isn't really a weak spot in that lineup where you can afford to put Ricky on every time, and the guy hitting behind Ricky will make that strategy hurt, I know we played them and they all just hit the shit out of the ball. Also they had big Jay Jackson on the team when we played them, deceptively quick and hits huge bombs...gonna be a tough day Farm Dog...good luck with that.

For the record, I dont believe in walking anybody really..I want to see Ricky hit as much as all his 12 year old fans want to see him hit( anybody else notice that Keenan might as well be a Back Street Boy with all the little girls that were cheering him on Sunday. And I dont mean Dionne) We will just have to out hit them. And Lem, I will supply the 30 pack..Bud..but..I think 2 years is plenty long enough to wait for my replacement Newtons!

| I heard East Providence Crowe gave up 18 runs in the first inning last night. By the way, there was only one bomb dropped at Hiroshima...a big Ricky Keenan mother of a bomb..but just the one. And boys, ifin you're gonna give up 18 runs an inning, one big bomb aint going to help. Dont look past the PNA.

| Wow after supporting lb4lb at the derby he just has to hate on the boys from the crowe. no one from the baaah is overlooking the pna they're an awesome team no matter what. and nevermind who hits behind keenan (a.k.a. best hitter on earth) but the whole lineup must hit, just like every team going into this tourny. east providence is just something we do to kill time until sundays. look out for pub and jr's. both stacked both awesome. just don't sleep on the crowe. 1-10 you don't want to pitch to. hinske will be holding it down behind keenan. lb4lb...disappointed with no love for you're potential new relationship hahaha....Mert is god and I'm out

| lb4lb has nothing but love for the Crowes. The wins this summer were both by 1 run...by the way...and ...Slick Rick was matched bomb for bomb by yours truly.. Crowes hit, Crowes catch & Crowes are the Pre-season pick to win 2008 Summer League. Dionne is the pre-season coach and GM of the year as well. One thing is for certain..this Coventry league is thick with talented teams...Pub, Botelhos, Farm, VFW/JR, Charlies, Crowe, PNA, DelPadre..those are just the teams I am familiar with and anyone of them can take this one&done tournament. And I have said it before, that Dionne kid plays a mean middle infield and gives the team the attitude and direction that it needs to win..much like Ian and Artie and JR..God I miss JR..and of course, Uncle Mert. | Lags....very simple answer for that one in two parts. 1) It was around 3:00am and I had just finished up 4 shifts in a row. 2) I'm a fucking idiot.
I was going from my notes on a scratch pad and I somehow screwed them all up. It was supposed to be Charlie's Place and Delpadre in the 2nd round and Delpadre moving on.
Nice Catch, I still didn't even realize I did that.
