Twin brothers have been jailed for allegedly attacking a Hispanic man and spewing racial slurs at him.
Marc and Matt Vestbie, 37, were arrested after witnesses told police that a license that read POOPY17 was on the pickup driven by the assailants.
The brothers were booked Tuesday into Washoe County Jail on suspicion of battery with a deadly weapon with a hate crime enhancement. The brothers are white, and the victim is Hispanic.
Police said the Vestbie brothers had yelled racial slurs at the man who was eating with
two friends just after 7 p.m. Monday at a Wendy's restaurant on South Virginia Street. The man took offense and followed the brothers outside.
The brothers took a cracked Miken softball bat and knife from their truck, the police report said. The victim was struck with the bat and stabbed in the leg. He was treated at Renown Regional Medical Center for nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.
The incident is not connected to the recent federal immigration raids at McDonald's restaurants, and no hate crimes against Hispanics or others have been reported, Sgt. Chris Lang said.
Police arrested the twins at the address of the registered owner of the truck on Spanish Springs Road.
