| SMITTY, AS A UMPIRE THIS IS CLEARLY THE BEST LEAGUE IN THE STATE. I AM A MULTI-SPORT HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL OFFICIAL WHO HAS BEEN AROUND A BIT. THE GUYS HAVE CLASS AND RESPECT THE GAME.IT WAS MY PLEASURE TO OFFICIATE ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP GAME FOR YOU AND LOOK FORWARD TO MANY MORE. THANKS AGAIN.

| Thanks, but to be honest most of your brethren are horrendous. We have guys making calls to speed the game along (this is not an accusation its a fact that they themselves admit to.) I am pretty sure I know which ump you are.... I'm guessing the skinny guy with a scruffy beard? You called me out earlier this year but said you would never make that mistake again and that took alot of class imo. Most won't admit their mistakes but rather make excuses for why they screwed up.

| first of all thanks.
and one of the umps was nice enough to find the site and post, lets not rip all of them.
if more umps got involved in the league like this one did maybe we would have less complaints. rather than rip them all, this one deserves some credit.

Smitty, I’m not one to bad mouth umpires for making questionable calls, it is a tough job dealing with a bunch of Sunday Morning warriors and I wouldn’t want to have to do it, my complaints have nothing to do whatsoever with calls. My complaints pertain solely to the repugnant behavior of some of the umpiring staff. While this man may not be one of the people in question, he certainly should be made aware of the situation.
There is a lot of talk going around the league about leaving ASA for USSSA and the main reason for the murmurings is due to the umpiring staff. Everyone that I have spoken to agrees that for the most part the only issue they have with the league itself is the way that the umpiring crews conduct themselves. They are extremely unprofessional to say the least.
Here are just some of the complaints directed toward the umpiring crews.
1) They show up at 9:30 and try to force the game to start early. Many teams have complained that the umps have tried to start games early and all of the players aren’t there yet. Games are to start at 10:00 and there is a 15 minute grace period in order to keep teams from having to forfeit. I haven’t yet seen a team that I have faced not have enough guys by 10:00, but you still have to allow them at least until 10:00 to get their players there. They will be bitching and moaning about how they have a game in another town to umpire and they need to be out of there early. (This is unacceptable since they are getting paid to umpire two games here and there obligation is to fulfill this agreement)
They’re failure to plan ahead is NOT OUR EMERGENCY! If they know in advance that they are supposed to be in East Providence at 12:00 then they should have enough common sense to realize that if they are umpiring two games starting at 10:00, that they aren’t going to make it and they should either not take the games here or not take the games there. Common sense dictates that it isn’t going to work out for them. Rushing us through the game is wrong no matter how you look at it.
2) The Umpires rush the games and make calls that they know are wrong simply to push the game along. All the time bitching and moaning about how they have to be out of there at a certain time to umpire games elsewhere. That is the last thing that we want to hear. Even if this is the case they should have enough brains to shut their mouths and not tell us they have other obligations.
3) Some umpires do not stay for both games. Many of them show up and umpire the first game and take off before the second one starts, some stay until they get paid and screw midway through the second game. This is absolute bullshit and has to stop. I refuse to pay the umpires until both games are complete unless I know the guys and know they are going to stay. If a guy has to leave early, he isn’t getting paid. It’s as simple as that. Once again it is not our problem that they have another game to go to, that is their problem.
4) Umps not showing up at all. I don’t know how many times there has only been one ump that shows up. This is wrong and has to stop as well. Now you are stuck paying a guy his pay plus half of the other guys pay for only 1 umpire. It’s not fair to the teams and it is not fair to the league to have to pay 1 ½ times for lesser quality of umpiring. Let’s face it, 4 eyes are better than 2 and it is much more difficult for one umpire to do all the jobs. He just can’t be in the correct position to make the right calls.
5) Blatantly making the wrong call simply to speed the game up. Once again it is not our problem that they have over-committed themselves during the course of the day, and we shouldn’t be the ones to suffer for it. My concern is not a girl’s softball team in East Providence, it is this league, and I demand better treatment from these guys. Our league is paying them to do the right thing for two games, if they can’t do that then don’t take the job and we’ll get people who can do the right thing. Just like you wouldn’t pay a plumber or a carpenter to do half the job, you pay them to do the whole job and to do it right!
These are just some of the complaints that I have heard and I agree with all of them. I’m not saying that this guy is guilty of any of it since I don’t know who he is, but he should be made aware of them and if he can he can direct us to the proper persons to correct it. I would be extremely grateful to him if he could do that.

| I AM A FIRM BELIEVER OF MAKING THE RIGHT CALLS AND DOING THE JOB AT HAND, BUT GIVE THIS GUY A BREAK GUYS. HE OBVIOUSLY HAS CLASS AND TAKES GREAT PRIDE IN HIS JOB. WE ALL KNOW WHO THOSE UMPS ARE THAT MAKE YOUR HANGOVER WORSE WHEN YOU GET TO THE FIELD SO LETS NOT BASH THE DUDE FOR DOIN THE RIGHT THING AND COMMENDING YOU GUYS ON WHAT IS A GREAT LEAGUE. I PLAY IN MANY LEAGUES AND THIS BY FAR IS UP THERE AS THE CREAM OF THE CROP.

| board nazi?........i barely comment..........but i do know which ump this is and he is one of my favorites and has a good league reputation.......the point is simply to keep things positive, we've done the ump bashing all year and here is one of the good ones, commenting and getting involved, which we want. lets back him, not rip his lesser teammates (i wish one of the hand gestures i could pick to go with this post was a middle finger just for you ernie, so here's the up your ass gesture)

I have been doing a lot of Zen Meditation on this matter and what I have come up with is this:
Someone has got to say it so that it gets back to the person who runs the ASA umpiring crews!!! I’m not bashing this guy and if he is the one I’m thinking of, I like him too! All I’m doing is pointing out that he should know what his fellow umps have been and continue to do and hopefully he will go to the right person and tell them what has been going on.
I agree that sitting here and posting ad nauseum on the matter is not doing any good. Does anyone here know who we should contact, hell…I’ll call Beverly or whoever it is now and give her the whole sordid story in great detail.
Plain and simple…We need new umps outside of this guy. Once again…please note that I am not including him in my rant “Board Nazi!” (Good one Ernie) Now go back and read your copy of Nietzsche’s “Thus Spake Zarasthustra”.
