Im a softball gear head. I buy a bat or two a year and try my best to know as much as I can about all the available bats and each technology they offer. So what I wanna know is what new bats are you guys gonna be breakin out this season? Anyone swinging the Miken Recoil or the Worth Mutant? Anyone using a bat from '07 or before that they swear by? Anyone gonna be using a Utrip bat instead of your old ASA bat?

Im gonna be swinging a Miken NRG 600 with an NRG 500 as my back up.

why arent you mentioning the Miken Freak Limited? I bought one off the bald devil. Am I screwed again?

No you're not screwed. The Limited has the same specs as the original freak 100. Its a great bat, especially with the low compression softballs. However, what a lot of people don't realize, and what Miken doesn't mention, is that the Freak Plus is a higher performance bat and is selling for $189 at its cheapest. You'll be very happy with the Freak Limited. No worries.

If anyone else is looking into buying a bat for the upcoming season and has any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask. I don't claim to be an expert, just a self educated enthusiast that has unbiased opinions and information, and I've bought and swung a lot of bats.

We picked up a few bats this year, The Demarini Juggernaut OTC, Easton Synergy + Bret Helmer, and a Jeff Hall Mayhem.

Bats really don't mean a whole hell of alot, it's the beef behind them that do the work. Guys like Knight, Ernie, Ryno, can swing a broomstick and hit the ball harder than I can with any of these new pussy bats.

I fully agree Mert, its not the bat, its the guy swingin it. But I like bats and I wanted to see if I could get a little discussion goin. I know the guys you mentioned are monsters and could hit it out of any field with a rope, but last time I played them, Knight was swingin a Freak 100 and Ryno was usin an old Mizuno Techfire. 2 classic bats with a lot of pop. Ernie, what you swingin? Smitty, you still using Eastons? Does anyone like Combat that isn't sponsored by them? Anyone using a lesser known brand that's workin well for them?

My favorite feature of the Easton Hammer is that it costs less than a package of 6 softballs. Also a feature people don't mention is the "ping" sound it makes when it makes contact with the ball is specifically tuned to a frequency that causes infielders to flinch which causes late reactions. Im currently in the R&D phase of manufacturing my own bat which when it makes contact with the ball, it makes a very low pitched "ping" at a frequency known as "the brown note". Should keep the outfields of the league well fertalized.

My Crush broke. Then my replacement Crush broke. And it's still in my garage waiting for you to check it for tampering Artie. Now I am swinging a Mayhem. Not broken in very well yet after a full season so I don't recommend it just because it takes so long.

Ryman, I'm swinging a mega maniac but only because its really well broken in. I am going to be getting the new miken remake of the original freak. The orginal freak was always my favorite bat and I was glad to hear they remade it. For my swing, and I think thats alot of what people forget. Bats are designed a bit different and one bat that works for one guy isn't going to work for another guy because of swing styles. Fast swing vs. slow swing and hard vs smooth are both factors. If you have decent bat speed and like an even weight distribution the original freak and the remake are perfect for you. I never have liked an end loaded bat. I believe they cause you to pop up especially late in tourney's when you are tired.

Ryno, I bought the ASA Jeff Hall Mayhem (the navy blue one) about 2 years ago, and its either still not broken in or the sweet spot is tiny. That bat turned me off towards worth bats. A friend of mine bought the ASA Jeff Hall Mutant and its breaking in nice and has some nice pop, but they're still pricey and I try not to pay that much for a bat.

I think we'll see a few of the new Freak Limiteds this season, especially for guys that have wanted one for a while but didn't wanna pay the $400-$600 dollars they were selling for on ebay.

With so many bats in your arsenal are you considering getting rid of some that you might not want any more to guys who just want to try another bat. Maybe the "every 2 week guy" not to insult the every other sunday guy but maybe someone who wants to spend $50 bucks and would like a quality bat with some life left in it

Gopher, I have a Utrip bat im trying to sell because its my 4th legal bat in my bag (I have 5 bats but the 5th is an Ultra II that I use to have people hit me infield practice). Its a Demarini Juice, its got a great amount of pop, its fully broken in, and its yours for $50. The "down-side" is that its a 26oz bat and a lot of guys think thats too light. But the bat is fully end loaded so all the weight is in the barrel which makes it swing heavier and drive the ball better. I loved the bat, just love the bats im using now more. Its got normal wear on it, original grip, and is good for hitting for power or control.

I also have the Worth Mayhem Jeff Hall 27.5 oz which is just starting to open up, but is not comfortably broken in yet. I wouldn't part with that for less than $100 though. Its in too good condition and its one of the only bats I've ever paid full price for.

If you're interested in either, give me a call 401-808-1298. Just leave a message if I don't answer. Any other interested parties can call for either bat too.

EW good point. I like endloaded bats which is why I loved the Crush so much. It felt like I was swinging a tree. No one else on my team ever used it except for Jay Warburton when I play for Interior.

Ryman. After my second Crush broke in 2006, (busted a hole right in the barrel), I used an un-named guys Mayhem and I was killing the ball. So I got one for 2007. Found out after that the Mayhem of the un-named guy was not entirely kosher so I bought a shity bat without knowing it was shitty.

I love to bust dutilly's balls about sucking but the truth of the matter is the retard has skills. He can do the tornado and somehow go balls deep and still get his tongue to tickle your asshole at the same time. In all seriousness Bob can hit the ball. The guy is a solid 500 hitter. That is without him doing the books.

So I swung a Miken Recoil (the Utrip one) at Patriot Oil's first practice of the year. Well let me tell everyone that this bat is the most lively bat I've swung in a long time. I used it almost right out of the wrapper too and the ball was still jumpin off the bat. By the end of the practice it was killing the ball. If anyone is lookin into getting a bat before the season starts and you don't mind spending some money, you could probably get this bat for about $250-$270 on kellysultimatesports.com but you'd have to make an offer. I highly recommend it and WILL be buying 2 next season when the price goes down. Anyone else swingin one?

I personally like the Red Mayhem. i used the bat on more than one occasion and would have to say that bat is one of the best i used. i have also been hearing about the Jeff Hull Mutant. people have told me that the mutant right out of the raper is isane..

The red Mayhem seems like it'll eventually be a very sought after bat like the freak 100 was before the limited was released. I've never swung it but would like to at some point to see what the fuss is about. I had the ASA version of the red mayhem (the navy blue one), and it took a long time to break in.

I swung the ASA jeff hall mutant and its got some good pop for an ASA bat, but only once it was broken in. Haven't swung the Utrip one but I hear good things.

Does anyone like Combat's?

What I think most people tend to forget is the fact that not every bat woks the same for every guy. You need to find the bat that compliments your swing.

What works best for your swing, end loaded, balanced, what weight, etc. etc.

It still eludes me which bat to buy for my horrid swing.

Mr. Dutilly...
Sorry for the delay in my reply but i was focusing on your special charity that we spoke about.

No it doesn't matter, but it looks nice when i swing it and because of that, sponsors pay me(that is where the money i donate to your cause come's from) because they say that the legal bat swing speed that i have, ables them to promote there name in ways that only you would understand. And that is something that is important to them because Bobby, other slow people like you really need some to look up to in such a way that you feel like you can dominate. And it helps with your ADD disorder that you so presiously are trying to get a handle on. So keep it up there...BUBBIE and thank you to all of your teammate's for not enforcing you to wear your special helmet when your at the plate. It shows you ARE just like us. Your just mad because i am kicking your ass in the NCAA Tournament. Please make contribution to "The Bobby Dutilly I just want to be like everybody else foundation" located at the corner of Eat Shit and Go fuckyourself.

P. S. You make this to easy...LOLOLOLO

Number 2 pencil???

Ryno I have a Bic Ball point pen that I was using last year, but I'm thinking that now since we are playing in USSSA that I might actually spend the money and go with a Garland Pen....or should I spend the extra money and go with a CROSS pen? The CROSS feels great in your hand and you can buy refills for them whereas the BIC, once it's spent it's spent. I went through 4 BICs last year, not very durable Then I was thinking about going with a GEL pen, but they don't last very long but are very enjoyable to write with.

I might keep a few BICS in my bag as team pens and use the CROSS for myself as a personal pen.

Now THAT is a veteran manager. Using a pen in the scorebook, brilliant! I've seen his pages too. Everything so precise and the text is written in the finest of caligraphy. Also if you scratch and sniff the pages, it smells like top of the line original flavor big league chew. Which is probably just from little guy gettin near the book, but I like to think its just the spirit of softball that comes out in Mertogs bookkeeping.

I've always been a fan of liquid or gel ink pens. Pilot is my brand. I think you should look into a pen sponsorship, Mertog.

Hey Smitty, how bout we all pitch in and buy the manager of the year a nice pen?
