I spoke with Guy Lefebvre today, Director of Coventry Parks and Recreation, about our field permits for the upcoming season. He also asked about our website and I gave him the information. Apparently, the Town didn’t know about the site.
April 1 is the anticipated first day of field availability. Until then, the fields are OFF LIMITS. DO NOT USE THE FIELDS. As soon as the fields are cleared for use I will update the website with that information.
WE DO HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM. Someone has used Hunter's Crossing as an off road track. They moved the boulders to get some kind of vehicle onto the field and have destroyed the outfield.
Mr. Lefebvre has asked for our help. He is short staffed with cut backs and still has the usual work load to prepare Coventry for the Spring/Summer.
Those enormous piles down the first base line can be spread into the tire tracks that have been left. The materials are there, we need to supply the man power.
NEXT SUNDAY, MARCH 22, 9:30am I’D LIKE TO WORK ON THE FIELD. The more help we have the better. Anyone with wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, any kind of equipment that will help needs to show up.
IF WE DON’T TAKE CARE OF THIS FIELD, OUR ENTIRE SEASON COULD BE IN JEOPARDY. POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: -Delayed start of season -More 12:00pm games -Loss of other Town privileges -The Town gives us the fields and let’s us operate on our own. This is a favor that has never been asked of us in the 10 years I have been involved.
Please post if you are willing to help and anything you can bring with you. Please DO NOT post if you have an opinion on the Town of Coventry or any other negativity.
I haven’t seen the field myself, but I’m hoping to post pictures tomorrow.

Ill be completely honest....im just an asshole and didnt want to go. I give the guys that showed up all the credit in the world and respect, cuz they didnt have to.
But if you wanna get technical we are not the only ones who use this feild, and god forbid we try to go there and hit during the week ( because doesnt every team have a designated nite to hit at there field ) say we wanted to scrimmage chip and his guys at hunters. Just like last year we show up and they have soccer practice there or they have little league baseball prac and we get off the feild and drive to another field in hopes of being able to hit outside. Because even tho we are drunks we are still considerate to the children of these leagues but it does get quite annoying.
Sorry smitty and i dont think its right that the guys that showed were the only ones to help. But i didnt see any soccer/baseball dads of coventry jumpin up and down saying they wanted to help.
And if guy reads this it is no disrespect to you or the parks and rec i understand the money situation and we are greatful for the use of the fields.
Ill buy you guys some beers when we play you in the season.....
p.s. Ernie is still gay. Smitty is still God aka The Sniper in Orange, man is he good with a bow and arrow.
And on a side note i think austin and demonti are still yelling at one another probably at a bar now instead of on the field.

Mac good points. I think the soccer practices start there in fall though and that is why we were asked to help. We are the first to use the field.
As for the field use.... We have specific days and hours the field is assigned to us. All the managers will be getting copies of the field permits on April 13th.
I will also scan them into the Waiver Form section so that individuals can print them out and carry them. If we have the field permit and someone else is there, you show them the permit and that should end it. If the problem continues and can't be resolved you can call the police and they will have to leave. You should not go to a field without the permit, this includes Sundays.
And a reminder, we can't go on the fields until April 1st. That day might be later depending on how the fields are drying up.

I feel bad about not being able to make it, I fully intended to be there with a couple of my guys. In fact two of my guys called and asked about it but I did not call them back, so apparently they didn't go without me. This is my fault.
I wound up going to the hospital Friday for bronchitis and a lung infection and have been out of work since Thursday and I am still out now.
I can't say much about this since I was not there myself but I will say this...thanks to all the guys who did show up and did the work for the rest of us. Without guys like you this league would have faced a serious problem and the start of the season could have been delayed. It shows what type of guys you are and your character and integrity are appreciated.
Nextly, the Director of Parks and Recreation asked the league for a personal favor in the midst of a budget crisis, so it does not matter who else uses the fields or when they use it, it only matters that they asked us. This was an opportunity to show our willingness to work with them and since they supply our fields and allow us to use them it was very important that we showed our willingness to work with them. Had this job not gotten done what would that say about the rest of us. I garantee more guys would have been complaining and bitching that the season was delayed or that we were no longer allowed to use the fields than showed up Sunday.
There were alot more important issues riding on this than originally meet the eye and thanks to a few we are able to continue on with our season this year. So we owe our entire season to the few that showed up and I think everyone should start to recognize that fact.

Hodde...there is a major difference between Club Joques functions and league functions.
1. It is not the league's responsibility to support your team. It is nice and is a courtesy when guys from other teams buy tickets to support your team, but why should they help buy you uniforms? If the entire sum went into the field that would be another story. If Club Joques themselves put some money into the field it would also be a different story. DelPadre helped out cleaning up the field last year and bought alot of tickets to the steak fry, did they get money for their uniforms no they got kicked to the curb, not a good way to get people to help in the future. Are the firefighters going to get some of that money for their uniforms? My guess is HELL NO. Just the fact that they spend their money in the bar is payment enough.
2. The Club Joques field is the sole responsibility of CLUB JOQUES to clean up not the leagues, once again it would be nice if people kicked in but it is not mandated that they do so.
3. Club Joques makes money from tournaments such as the PNA tournament and everything else that goes on there and that is their incentive.
4. You seem to forget that each team needs to raise money to buy their uniforms, pay their league fees and it's not all about Club Joques. Yes the club provides a field to the league, but they also make money from that especially from the firefighters this year and most likely from most visiting teams. It's convenient for people to stay and have a few after the game which is nice.
5. Many teams have their sponsors to support as well, do you come into On The Roch's and drink with me? I know that guys from Botelho's, VFW, A+, and PNA and guys like MAC and several others have been to Roch's, and I have been to Club Joques 4 times last year.
I don't mean to rag on you but you have got to get this notion that everyone should support Club Joques and realize that if the club wants to make money they have to start making it worth everyones while to kick in there as well. I also know for a fact that several guys from the leauge supported your steak fry this year and guys from my team have gone to a few of the steak fry's there last year for different occassions.

Hodde, you don't seem to get the point. Steak fry money goes to the club who then pockets it and spends nothing on the field. I go buy my one ticket and a few guys from the PNA went. We go because we enjoy eating steak and drinking beer don't confuse us for understanding or liking how the club just lets the field go to shit. Steak fry money goes towards god knows what else but it sure as hell isn't going towards the field. I am one of the few who does show up to help with your "field day" so for that reason i can call it what it is. It's a steaming pile of shit, but I go because I like your drunken ass and I don't want to play in the sandbox without at least attempting to make it somewhat playable. Someone needs to get a grip in the club and put some money into the field. This constant mention of 30 packs brought to the field should stop too. Seriously a few guys do that, but who cares with them comes others who are buying from the bar and when their beer runs out they are probably going into the bar too. It costs the club nothing to let them do it and it also as a side benefit gets some others to stick around longer etc. The logic of bitching about 30 packs and thinking that everyone should pour money into steak frys and fund raisers for CJ field is bullshit. Just call it what it is... a steak fry for your uniforms and league fee so the cheapest club in coventry won't have to spend the money. I can say that because I play for the best club in coventry!

Hodde like I said before, I'm not ragging on you, you are stuck in a tough position. However, my issue is with the Club itself. Yes, they let guys play here but they also make decent money from doing so. The PNA tournament, there were tons of guys drinking in there all day as was the case during the championships and the other events we had at the club.
My point is that it is not the leagues responsibility to support one sponsor over another nor is it their responsibility to buy uniforms for one team. Like I said alot of guys from other teams bought your tickets of their own free will and accord, but to say that more guys should have bought tickets so that you could buy uniforms is absolutely fucking insane. I think all 300 should buy tickets to the Roch's steak fry so I can get a penis enlargement how does that grab ya!
By the way, I haven't spoken to the Captain of the work crew yet, I've been out sick all week, I should talk to him wednesday, sorry about the delay but I will definately take care of that for you.
Rememeber to make money you have to spend money..you have to have something that people want. If Club wants guys to hang out there and drink, and have games of the weeek there and all sorts of other events then they should make it worth our while. They can't possibly expect everyone to buy tickets to their steak frys, go and clean up their field, hang out there and spend more money and piss off their own sponsors in exchange for what? They charged like 3.50 for a fucking nasty ass hot dog...how about putting dogs out like Harris did or Sunset did or doing something like Crowe did? Where is their willingness to draw people in?
If I remember correctly Rob...it was you who spent your own money and opened up your truck for guys, because that is the kind of guy you are...but why should you have to do that..make the fucking club do it. You bust your balls for them and they do nothing to help you out!

Cold weather where bats crack, balls are harder and even worse the ground is harder and still it had a good turn out.
Where I agree with you is the banquet, but lets be honest...how well has the banquets been run in the past, how much emphasis was placed on it, how much was it advertised? If the trophies and so on and so forth were handed out that day it may draw more people. Instead we usually hand the trophies over after the final game of fall ball. There are some things we could do to possibly make it more desirable to attend.
True the showing for the field clean up was not what it should have been...but talking to many guys around the league the general sentiment was the two teams who use Hunter's as a home field should have been there in full force. How many guys from Patriot and Pub showed up? I'll be honest with you I had scheduled to take a vacation day sunday and work on the field before I got sick. Had I showed up after taking time out of work and guys from the Pub and Patriot didn't show, I would have been extrememly pissed off. Brian and his dad and two guys from Patriot showed up. Thank god for the Stallions who sent the largest contingent. So I can see where Smitty is a little miffed.
But your point is that you feel that everyone should show up to Club Joques functions and support your team, but you just can't seem to understand that we all have our own sponsors to appease and our own things to support. Now my team is no different from any other but where it is tough is that like the firefighters we have screwed up schedules and most of us have to do switches just to be able to make it sunday. Thus we work doubles on Fridays or Saturdays to get Sunday off. It is near impossible for us to make any other function. I'm sure we are not the only ones, I know that Ernie has a pretty screwy schedule too.

Would collecting prepayment at the beginning of the year be a way to guarantee attendance to the banquet at the end of the year? Part of the league fees or player fee could be a certain number of tickets per team which would boost attendance I assume. And the real money is probably made off alcohol at the banquet not the food. If 5 or ten guys from your team are going to the banquet I bet some other teammates would be encouraged to attend.

my opinion only but i think we should have a banquet in the middle of the season to raise money, even if its a steak fry and then let our trusty staff of elected officials decide what we should do with that excess $ or save it for unforseen circumstances.
i know once sunday morning ends people start doing other things, especially if you didnt make playoffs or didnt recieve a trphy most guys arent really into showing up for nothing cuz tehre is no more softball talk. i dont wanna show just to see the champs gloat! if u do it in the middle then u could still talk ball and see some of the guys u played at the beginning of the season but havent seen since cuz your always at diff feilds. i bet you would get people to show. let me hear some feed back like i said its just an idea. and you never know u get people together in the middle and everyone has a good time u might be able to pull of an end of the year one.

One thing that Smitty and I have discussed was purchasing the safety bags for each team, we were thinking of fund raising ideas for this. I had thought of doing a tournament, but a banquet would work.

Eddie, good call. I will sign up for anything involved clam cakes, chowder, or even barely edible food.
