-All stats that I have, have been posted

-Picks total, the leaderboard, and surveys for the rest of the season have been added to the PICKS SECTION. The surveys will close the Friday night before each week's game. You can take them week-by-week or all at once.

-Front page poll added. Mac has been begging me for a poll and I finally had an idea.

Providence’s Tazza to offer a taste of Barry’s on Saturday nights

01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, June 13, 2009

By Barbara Polichetti

Journal Staff Writer

PROVIDENCE — He’s back.

Barry Blair, the nightclub impresario who kept the mirror ball spinning and the dance beat booming for nearly 30 years in Warwick, is returning to Rhode Island’s nightclub scene after a four-year hiatus.

Blair, who for more than 25 years ran Barry’s nightclub in Warwick, recently announced that he is teaming up with the owners of Tazza café on Westminster Street, to create “Barry’s reunion dance parties” every Saturday night throughout the summer.

Yes, that means well-groomed doormen, the trademark Barry’s burgers, dance music with accompanying big-screen videos, flashing lights, and Blair –– still the eternal perfectionist –– on hand to make sure everyone has a good time.

“When I first walked away from the business my mind needed a rest,” said Blair, who was just 18 when he opened Barry’s in 1979. He was last in the limelight in the fall when he stood in the nightclub parking lot at 1473 Warwick Ave. and watched wrecking crews take down the gabled building that had seen generations of dance-club cool evolve from disco polyester to the beat of hip hop.

The locale of the former hotspot where hundreds of people would line up at the door Friday and Saturday nights is now a bank, and Blair said he used his time away from the dance-club business to concentrate on acting, martial arts and designing a kitchen device that he hopes to market soon.

He hadn’t really planned a return to the nightclub scene, he said, but was sitting around a table at Tazza with a good friend, filmmaker Michael Corrente, and some other companions this spring when the subject of a Saturday night dance fundraiser Corrente was planning came up.

Blair said he found himself offering to orchestrate “Barry’s reunion nights” at Tazza on summer Saturdays, with some of the cover charge going to a changing rotation of charities. Tazza owner Michael Corso and managing partner Darren MacDonald were more than interested.

The cozy dining spot with its warm cinnamon-orange interior has long prided itself on being eclectic. It’s known for its gourmet coffees, breakfasts, lunches and dinners and its varied entertainment that can be folk music one night and a belly dancer the next.

MacDonald had been a Barry’s patron, so he said he thought he knew what he was getting himself in for — but there have been some surprises.

Blair, who oversaw every aspect of Barry’s from the themed VIP rooms to the spiral staircases that ascended from the dance floor, is not one to do anything half-hearted. He’s been at Tazza almost every day for the past 10 weeks overseeing the installation of lights, a neon-lit bar and other touches that will meld Barry’s past with Tazza’s present.

There are now mirrored spinning cylinders hanging among the red Asian-deco ceiling lamps that are part of Tazza’s décor. In the middle is the piece de resistance –– the disco ball that fractured the light at Barry’s and has been tucked away in Blair’s home for the past few years.

MacDonald said the changes that Blair is making have raised a few eyebrows among patrons, but he thinks it all works. About the only thing that gave him pause, he said, was when Blair covered some of the half-walls that partition parts of the dining room with gold mirror-ball paper. “But hey,” MacDonald said, “I think we’re the only coffee house in New England with a mirror ball.”

Blair said he wants the Barry’s feeling to be authentic but is committed to not infringing on Tazza’s identity and has hired an interior decorator to make sure the merger is seamless. “This is a great place, with great food and great warmth and I don’t want to change that,” said Blair, who is having custom covers made for the mirror ball and cylinders so they won’t sparkle any time but on Saturday nights.

Blair and MacDonald said they’re confident that they’ve got a winning combo of the past and present, but the real test will come Saturday night when all the tables and chairs are pushed aside and the DJ –– Blair –– begins playing tunes such You’re the One for Me by D. Train and Got to Be Real by Cheryl Lynn.

“It’s going to be old school-dance music,” Blair said. “And just like at Barry’s, everything is going to nice, very nice. I just think it’s going to be a lot fun — so many people met at Barry’s, got married, had kids and maybe even have since gotten divorced. I think it’s going to be a great chance for people to bump into friends they haven’t seen for years.”

MacDonald said he think the Barry’s nights are going to fit in with Tazza’s eclectic clientele, which ranges from college students to retirees.

And they’re already thinking big. Blair, who said he’s enjoying working in an urban setting, also said that he loves that small city park that Tazza looks out on has an outdoor movie screen because they’re going to be showing a film there to keep people entertained if they end up waiting in line.

The movie?

Back to the Future. Of course.

T Mac... think you are spot on... he must be hoping for a one year supply of Mobil On The Run frozen burritoes.

Speaking of Jackson... just sent me a text... sitting at a bar in Charlotte... as one would assume he is wasted. A victim of the "make it a double for an extra dollar?".
