Are you allowed to do a fake tag on a throw to 2nd base from home plate on a steal????????

The short answer is yes.

In OBR (official baseball rules) based leagues, such as this, there is nothing that prevents a player from faking a tag to induce a slide or a retreat. Now, if that tag actually makes contact with a runner, you may (and I stress may, because it is a highly subjective call to make) get an obstruction call. However, even if a obstruction call is made, it would be type B obstruction, which limits the opportunity to award a runner an additional base.

In High School baseball, the rules explicitly prohibit a fake tag, and with all obstruction calls in high school baseball, the runner is award a minimum of one base from the point of the infraction.

A vast majority of the time, a fake tag will be a legal tactic to use. Only in situations where a tag is held on a person and it prevents them from continuing to run the bases, or is applied with intent to harm, would I expect to see some sort of call made.

I was at the game also. The shortstop did not fake a tag. He faked that the ball was thrown over his head (which he was told not to do again). He jumped in the air as if the ball went to center field. How it is possible to be in the air and faking a tag? The jump didnt cause a slide, it was to hope the player rounded second where he could be tagged out.

I thought it was clever how the shortstop reacted to the play. He knew the runner was probaly trying for third due to the bounce off the catcher that made the ball go towards the home dugout. He did not touch the runner or interfere with his base path. Just saying it was a very smart play to see the shortstop do.

I am on Sto Ken Rox's team and first off the short stop did nothing wrong. He jumped in the air and faked that the ball went to me in centerfield. The ump told him not to do it again and so he didn't. The shortstop played the play well and Sto Rox isn't BUSH? haha
