Smoltz will be a GREAT addition to our team. He didn't work out as a starter in Boston, but in his first 2 innings in his starts, he had a 0.64 ERA.

The Cards 1-3 starters are phenomenal (reminds you of '06) and what we need is a little bullpen help. He will do this. Smoltz in the 8th and Franklin in the 9th.

Carpenter and Wainwright gettin 7 innings in every start with 2 or less runs given up.

Good time to be a Cards fan!

Its really Ironic when a cub fan talks about a bad baseball move, but hey they should be better a spotting at them then most. I think Smoltz will work with Duncan and be just fine as our number 5 starter, he will be much better than Bradley and Fukodome and Soto and pretty much most the roster on the Cubs this year right Cubbie fan? Smoltz one a hall of famer pitching for the Cards back in the N.L. where he has a book on these hitters. It smells like a playoff run!!!

I don't think he was saying it's a bad move. I think he was talking about Favre playing for Minnesota who was a Green Bay rival. Same with Smoltz with StL who was an Atlanta rival.

Anyway, it's a done deal. He'll probably start Sunday.

I'm not a Cub fan and definitely not a Cards fan, but thought I would interject with a quote and column I read....

"When you have an opportunity to bring the expertise and experience of a future Hall of Famer to your club, it's easy to see why we are excited about the prospects of what John Smoltz can do to improve our team's chances as we approach the stretch drive."

The Red Sox were excited, too, but Smoltz's contribution to their pennant drive was mostly disastrous. Smoltz had an 8.32 ERA with a .968 OPS against in eight starts for Boston, which went 2-6 in those games.

He's back in th N.L. where he dominated for most of his career. He's with the best pitching coach in baseball, and he still features a 90 mph fastball. He has the best catcher in baseball to throw to and all the experience in the world. I think there is more pressure to win in Boston and plus, the lineups in the A.L. east are just loaded. Many more +'s than -'s

All valid points. The thing is that he's not being brought here to start. That is not the "reason". He's being brought here to be a setup man for Franklin or a 2 inning reliever in the playoffs. He'll get 3-5 starts as our 5th guy for the remainder of the year. He's not going to hurt us any more than Boggs or Wellemeyer and if we're 2-3 in those 5 starts, then that's great.

He has a 0.64 era in the first 2 innings of his starts this year. That spells "tough the first time through". That's what we need in a middle reliever/setup man.

I smell NLCS!!!!!
