| Here is a copy of an e-mail i sent to Ian with a concern i had. Ian could you please post your response as well my follow up email so everyone can see the facts. I am interested in seeing what people have to say. As much as some people dont like Artie take him out of it and be sure to read all the emails
Ian, Not that i am trying to start a war but I have a question for you. I was reading peoples stats as well as the by-laws and i would like to question as well as challenge Nick Cudmore being allowed to play in the playoffs. I am not a genius by far there are people like yourself who are a hell of a lot smarter than i am but i would like to point out Article VII sub section B and it reads as follows B. Exempt players must have plate appearances in one half plus one (1/2+1) of the regular scheduled season. If the (½+1) criteria is not met, it will not be considered a completed season for the exempt player and that season must be repeated. Any exempt player not meeting the aforementioned criteria will not be eligible for the playoffs. So reading the final stats Cudmore has played in 15 games, i don't know if that is counting the forfeits against Trust but nowhere in our by-laws does it say that a player will get credit for an at bat for forfeited games. Furthermore the rule states that a player must have plate appearances so it would be impossible to count a forfeited game towards any at bats. I feel that if the stats are correct and he has only had plate appearances in 15 games and even if Artie tried to fight to add the two forfeits it would be breaking our rules that were set up to govern ourselves. Please review my question and let me know what i need to do from here please feel free to post this on the smack page so others are aware of the challenge. Thank you for any consideration in regards to this matter Respecfully, Anthony Nardolillo

| Anthony,
As always, thanks. I need people like you looking out for the best interest of the league. It is not in the by-laws and never has been in the by-laws.
When I took over as statistician, while Helen was still Secretary and Treasurer and Baxter was President, I called her at the end of the year. She always gave games to the players who were on the winning side of the forfeits. I have continued that practice and I agree with it as well. I will bring your issue forward next year and make it a by-law or find another solution. If you have suggestions please advise.
Let me explain why I think it is the best solution. I have a guy on my roster, Jeff Kendra, that is a traveling meteorologist for the Nationwide and Senior PGA tour. He is home for two weeks and then away for three or the opposite. When he is home he plays. This year, his schedule allowed him to play 4 times (8 games) in our 15 week schedule. Jeff's not a superstar, he's a good outfielder and a singles hitter. He will be away for the playoffs unless we make the championship, and I'll probably use him as he is a solid outfielder if we are so lucky. He texts me every week he is away Sunday afternoon to see how we did and has been in the league for years. If one week he is home, and the other team forfeits, why should he be ineligible?
If you'd like to make this a smack issue, it's your call. I will have the same answer. Likewise, your roster will be receiving 4 games when I add in the games played.
And again, thanks.
IAN

| Anthony's response to me:
Ian,
I personally don't care if Cudmore plays or not my only concern was looking out for the best interest of the league and I appreciate your response as well as your position. You know that I am one of your biggest supporters as to the job you do with this league. I know you always catch a lot of bullshit and that is in no means what I am trying to do and as for Artie he is one of my good friends and has been for along time so I don't care who the issue was with I would feel the same if it was a crowe player. Now here is my argument to your response, I know Jeff and he is and always has been a great kid and I understand his job keeps him playing many games but in my opinion you take the person out of the equation and look at the facts of the incident. #1 did Cudmore appear at the plate in at least 1/2 +1 games and the answer is no therefore he should not be eligible. I am going to post my email on smack to see what others opinions are not to attack you or anyone else in the league so please feel free to post your explanation as well. Thanks again

Ant I think you throwing it all out there and not hiding behind a random letter from Massacchusetts is the right way to go. Bravo.

ONE PLAYER DOES NOT MAKE A TEAM AND IF SOMEONE IS READY TO PLAY BALL AND THE OTHER TEAM CANT FIELD A TEAM AND SAID PERSON IS THERE FOR THE WINNING TEAM VIA FORFEIT, WHATS THE ISSUE? YOU THREW ALOT OF BY LAW TECHNICAL STUFF IN THERE ANT, BUT PLEASE ALLOW YOURSELF ON A REASON OTHER THAN THE BY LAWS A CLEAR AND CREDIBLE REASON WHY CUDDY SHOULDNT BE AWARDED THOSE TWO GAMES? AND IF HE WASNT AWARDED THOSE TWO GAMES, HOW THAT WOULD BE FAIR TO HIM AS A PLAYER IN OUR LEAGUE, DONT "YOU" THINK INSTEAD OF ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR "THE LEAGUE" IN WHICH YOU HAVE NO POSITION IN OR ANYTHING OTHER THAN BEING A "PLAYER" IN THIS SAME LEAGUE THAT MAYBE YOU WOULD STAND BEHIND A FELLOW PLAYER AND MAYBE GET HIS BACK NEXT TIME, NO DISRESPECT TO YOU ANT, BUT I THINK THE RITE THING WAS DONE FOR OUR PLAYER AND I COMMEND IAN FOR STICKING TO THE ROOTS OF THIS LEAGUE AND NOT TRYING TO REINVENT THE WHEEL AND STICKING TO OUR FOUNDERS POLICY, OOOPS, DIDNT KEEP MY MOUTH SHUT, MY BAD.

| Cudmore Stinks. Rewrite the by laws to read: " if any team forfeits against you then ALL of your players are immediately playoff eligible" Ipso facto...Lessard is now playoff eligible. That nonsense aside, neither Cudmore nor VFW should be punished because their opponent forfeited on the last day of the year with CUD still needing two games to be eligible. We all know its highly likely that there was some behind the scenes dirty dealing..but, really, thats immaterial and should be stricken from the record. Anybody know CUD's wife...?...well, even though he is now playoff eligible I would be very very surprised to find Mr Nick at the field three weeks in a row. He is a dedictated family man and spending 4 hours three sundays in a row in Coventry may be too much to ask of him. The rule, unwritten, but soon to be written: Forfeited games count as games played for the winning team but NOT for the losing team of the forfeit..ie..the team that forfeited. So, if Delpadre has a guy two games short....that guy doesnt qualify. By the time the Artie gets done looking for By Law loopholes and we keeping adding by laws to plug his loopholes...The by laws will be as thick as a telephone directory . Remember when Red Aurebach drafted Larry Bird as a junior eligible?....Artie is the Red Aurebach of our league. Except, you know, with a criminal record. And fatter. To beat the VFW you got to beat them on and OFF the field

| First of all i don't know Cudmore and i agree mike it is softball and one player doesn't make a team. There was alot of grumblings about this so i read the by-laws and was the only one with the balls to question it. I can see that you don't want to punish a player because another team can't field enough guys but like i said the way the rule reads is they must have plate appearances so i don't understand how you can count a forfeit as a plate appearance. If you throw the rules out the window then there would be no difference if you showed up on Sunday with a painted Ultra and were allowed to use it. Artie i made sure i pointed out in my e-mail that it wasn't anything personal with you and i would feel the same way if it was my own teammate. Mike if i was looking for an advantage against you guys i would have the swat team grab you, player, lemme, riley, and espo the night before we played you and your team would still be stacked.

| Ant , the rule has been thoroughly analyzed with in the last few days. Its flawed. Its mentioned above: what if delpadre wanted to F vfw and Cudmore for the playoffs and strategically forfeited ..Cud gets no games played. Cuds out of playoffs. We cant have that. Lets be thankful that we have artie. He has employed the " lost the scorebook " move , the " left the league in longtome good standing " move, the " dont blame me blame Jencksy " move " you only hate me cuz im black " rule to get players exempt and/or qualify for the playoffs. Without artie, we have like one by law.

| The right call was made here. Any league that I've ever played in, once a forfeit is decided, the full roster for the non-forfeiting team gets credit for those games in question.....the forfeiting team does not get any credit for its players.
Good luck to everyone for the remainder.

| Artie I know that was just an example, and it is a valid point that everyone sems to agree with. The team that wins by forfiet should get credit for games.
However, rumor is that there was an offer of a couple of bats in exchange for a forfiet. If any part of that story is true I am not cool with that from either side of the fence. That is where the weasle and snake thing comes in. That is a bullshit move from all parties involved and I hope someone will step up and address such rumors.

| “pay fines for forfieting to win a state championship bylaw “
Mission Statement: The primary objective of the Coventry Men’s Softball League (CMSL) is to promote competition and symmetry throughout the league, promote and/or maintain membership, while preserving the integrity of the league and its by-laws. The CMSL’s main responsibility is to the organization itself and to the players it encompasses. The CMSL is not concerned and will not take into consideration the concerns of other leagues, organizations and sponsors.
“pay fines for late stats (wasnt enforced this year)”
Correct I didn’t enforce it this year, for anyone. Eaton was late several times. Please read the following emails to explain.
May 12th eaton Ian, Sorry for the delay in getting the stats. If you were not aware, Eaton was flooded 4 weeks ago when the Pawtuxet overflowed its banks. I have been working 10-12 hour days every day except Sunday and have not had a chance to get to them I will get them to you by Friday. WE are 0-8 and lost last week 22-2 and 25-5. Thanks,
July 13th eaton Hey Ian, I had intended to get them done last week but Eric had the book. While we are still recovering from the flood, we are new working out of two sites. I haven’t seen him very much and I’ve missed the last few games due to prior engagements. I will be hopefully seeing him tomorrow and submit the stats on Thursday night. As I did earlier in the year, I did 3 or 4 games at a time. I’m sorry I haven’t gotten them done it is usually something I enjoy, but with the long weeks, performance on the field and planning a wedding, it’s been tough. I appreciate that you have been very lenient with all we have been going through. If you need anything else, please let me know.
The CCFD was also late several times. Please read the following emails to explain. May 3 ccfd Ian, Here are my stats for the 1st two weeks of the season. Sorry it took so long. Also I left you a message yesterday regarding our team forfeiting 2 games against the Crowe Bar on 5/2/10. I need to pay the $100.00 to the league so we can continue to play. Also I am having some problems with my roster and I may have to approach the league for some changes. I have some guys that have decided not to play, and if I can not replace those guys then I may have more forfit issues later on in the season. I am looking to avoid that kind of trouble. I will be in touch. Thanks, Chris
June 7th ccfd Ian, Here are all the stats that I owe you. Sorry it was over the 2 week limit. I have had a bunch of medical issues going on for me and time has been tight. Chris
Also, Crowe and the Backstabbers were late but it covered the July 4th weekend as by laws state they get three weeks there which they didn’t pass.
Also, GQ was late twice. Once, Dionne had the stats and we couldn’t meet to get them to me, but the league had them and the other time I was to meet Saballa and had to cancel.
“and my favorite the you stole my dugout bylaw”
And the dugout by-law is home field advantage. The seniority list decides nothing but what our home fields are and has been in existence for 40 years. Apparently, past practice wasn’t good enough and we had to write down, in the by-laws, that with home field you get to choose your dugout. I think it’s ridiculous as well.
And so I admit I did not do my job as President and make sure the Statistician enforced and collected fines. That being said, we have to do elections this month.
Our next meeting is Monday, August 9, at 7:30PM at the PNA. If anyone would like to run for office of PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT, TREASURER, OR SECRETARY please contact me immediately. We can hold elections at that meeting. If anyone objects to this election schedule then I will move the elections to August 16. Also, if anyone objects to incumbent officers not being at the elections then we will move the elections again.

| Seeing that i am more hated than artie now here are my next rants. Forfeits- Any team that forfeits with notice should have to pay the fine and it be non-refundable. Any team that forfeits the day of the game should have to pay double the non-refundable fine. I think the only exception should be first year teams other than that we are allowed to have 21 players for a reason. All the manager work with each other if there is a major conflict and games need to be moved. Also the league has always allowed teams that lose players mid year add more than enough players. Stats-I think the fines for stats should be imposed. I don't see any reason for it to take more than two weeks to turn stats in. Then Ian can update the stats more regularly and keep everyone happy.

As for showing up at the field and not having enough guys, punish them.
Stats. No excuse. 30 guys are at Crowe every game 3. Swing by and drop them off to Dionne or Ian can stop in and pick them up. Easy.

We started the year with a decent sized roster but we have had one player quit and others who haven't been able to come for very good reasons. | i can't think of anything else that isn't in the rule book. but im sure it will happen soon enough and ill get blasted.
i appreciate ant taking the time to think and go through the by-laws for all of us. and he took the time to ask me in a decent way.
if anyone thinks of anything else, please let me know.
and finally, i think we have three problems major communication problems that shouldn't exist.
1. managers don't relay info to the players.
often managers make rule changes and the players find out in some unfortunate circumstances. a little of this is the managers fault but most of it is..... 2. website viewing by everyone.
some of you are set to only bring up the smack page and miss info on the front page. some managers read the site once or twice a month. and once again, there are only 15-20 people that post regularly. while a lot of it is bs posting, some of it like this is very useful and gets us thinking. (For example, i see what ant is saying, but i have absolutely no idea what a better solution is. if someone has an idea, i want it)
3. players don't give ideas to managers, or email me.
from February to April, sixteen of us are working on rules. at the end of every season and the beginning of meeting season i ask the whole league on the website if they have any suggestions or problems. rarely, does anyone bring anything up. its everyone's league, but the same people make all the decisions.
finally, we have a great league with great people in it and situations like this keep it that way.
finally round two, if anyone has rule changes they'd like to see or ideas to improve the league, LET ME KNOW.

| Here is my final comments on the Cudmore topic. After rereading the by-laws it does state that past practice will be used if something is not covered by our by-laws. So as Ian explained it was the way its always been done so it continues. It is my suggestion that anytime something unusual comes up it should be documented and added to the by-laws the following year to eliminate any confusion because chances are it will happen again.

| All of this was a good discussion other than anything Artie says and does because well Artie is never right. Ian is doing and excellent job running this league and I hope he continues to run it for the foreseeable future. People can shit on how the league is run or wonder how something got missed, but it's always easier to play Monday morning quarterback than it is to see it BEFORE it happens. Even the Nick Cudmore "issue" is really a non issue in my mind. Nick qualifies and rightly so. I would love for Artie to not have Nick on the roster, but Nick deserves to be there due to past practice and because the practice of letting him get at bats for a forfeit insures that people don't have strategic forfeits. I hope that the people making the decisions for the league continue to do so for a long time.

| I played for VFW for 3 years and PNA for 1. When I left VFW they were still a top team. So you are giving me a hard time for leaving a top tier team? That's pretty amusing. I went to the PNA to be reunited with guys that I started playing softball with back in West Warwick and on Tucker's old Allstate team. That experiment didn't work out and I then moved to the team that was a close 2nd to the PNA. You will all be eating your words when I play for Ian for the foreseeable future. I am a member of Ian's team until Ian no longer runs it.

| By the way Uncle Polesmoker, I never went to Botelho's to guarantee a championship. Those words have never and will never come out of my mouth. I asked Ian to play for him because they are a fun team to play with and much like the moulton guys their team just loves each other. The Moulton guys play softball together drink together and are good friends all year long not just during softball. It is the same way on Botelho's. Not so much softball teammates as friends and that makes Sundays as fun as they have ever been for me.

| BTW Big Ern McCraken, you overlooked one glaring fact...your stats are dropping faster than your shorts when you and Dutilly get together, they may not want you on the team that long. That's what happens when you won't drag your lazy ass to the gym on the off season! Now call me and I'll get you back in shape other than round!
