| 2011 MCFFU WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2011 MCFFU WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IV are being held in Sanford FL. Martin Luther King weekend, January 14,15 and 16 2011. With over 30 teams from all over the country alrady registered to compete for the PRO and PRO/OPEN Titles it promises to be the largest 9-man ineligble event to date. Several of Connecticuts elite teams will look to shock the flag world and bring home either or both of the prestigious championships.
In the PRO Division Connecticut powerhouse's, the YOUNG GUNZ(New Britian) and the CHARGERS(New Haven) are gearing up for the trip south. Very few CT teams have had as succesful a year both in-state and on the circuit as the GUNZ. Their athleticism, speed and overall team chemistry, coupled with a few key additions to the tournament team give them a legitimate shot to dethrone the back-to-back World Champion Baltimore Packers. The defensive and special teams units have carried this squad in previous national events behind the play of (DE)Michael "Cheif" Peterson, (LB)Todd "Showtime" Hill, (KR/PR)Adomis "Pito" Gonsalez, (K)Juan Duque and (CB)Tony "the Tiger" Morales. The big question will be if their offense has finally caught up to their defense when challenged by the nations best defense's. If signal caller Chris Roberts can lead the offensive attack and limit turnovers the GUNZ may be the biggest sleeper team in the tournament
The CHARGERS are looking to regroup and regain some of the respect they have lost from a poor 2010 circuit season. Injuries, defections and inconsistencies on the roster have hurt this once feared team. With Sanford just a month away the talk around CHARGERS camp is that they are as healthy as ever and will have all the pieces intact to compete once again with the nations best. They have shored up the QB position with veteran Joey Edmonds, a double threat QB who is battle tested vs top competition. If they are able to give him time, he will make the best of their many targets. Defensively they may have 2 of the better D-lineman in the nation in (DE)Uyi Osunde and (NG)Jon "Man-Child" Lee-Hugh and they are gonna need all the pressure they can get if the secondary doesnt play better than it has this year. There are alot of question marks here but the talent is there for them to regain there spot among the nations big boys
The PRO/OPEN Division will be as competitive and as deep as ever this year as many talented teams failed to make the cut for the top 16. With that said, Connecticut has 2 of the most dangerous and veteran PRO/OPEN tams in the event with the STEELERS(Hartford) and BULLDOGS(Willimantc). The BULLDOGS are a quick, athletic squad who in the past have not had the muscle to hang with the MCFFU's more physical teams, but the DOGS have added some "BIG" pieces for their tournamnet team and with standout athletes such as (QB)Anthony "AG" Gonzalez, (WR/S)Tyrese Hixon, (CB/KR) Tay Winn and (DE)Tishay Johnson they are a top contender for the PRO/OPEN title. The STEELERS head to FL looking to prove a point. Although they have always battled to the end against elite competition, they get very little respect outside of Hartford. With several truly special players, (WR/S/KR)Jaime "Rocket" Bryant amd (RB/DE)Devaughn "Pig" Meade to name a few, and a deep, athletic, tough roster they will be a force to reckon with. (QB)Mike Colavito and the Steelers defense will determine if the Pride of Hartford can bring home the hardware.
On belahf of the GCFFA, GOOD LUCK to all the Connecticut teams in there quest for respect and glory at the World Championships!!
