| Runners on first and second and just one out. Batter hits a pop fly to the second baseman that the base umpire properly says "infield fly, batter is out." During the batters swing, the catcher obstructs the swing with his glove. The defense ends up not catching the pop fly and the runner on second scores and the runner from first ends up at 3rd. The batter ends up on second base. How are you ruling on this one??? (below)
RULING - Plate umpire announced "that's obstruction and give delayed dead ball signal" when the batter hit the catchers glove. Although the base umpire declared "infield fly, batter is out," the offense may choose to take the result of the play or the penalty. If the play stands, the runner from 2nd scores, the runner that was on 1st is now at 3rd, and the batter is out due to the infield fly. If the offense elects to have the obstruction penalty enforced, the batter will get first and the other runners move up a base. So now, the bases are loaded, still one out, and no runs have scored (yet). Such election shall be made before the next pitch (legal or illegal). NSA Rule Book 8-2-f (1, 2, & 3) page 125-126.
