| GATORS (Ansonia) 27 CANES (Connecticut) 6
There were more than a few questions surrounding the legendary Gators leading up to their Spring debut. A few veterans had left the squad, another was out on IR and they historically hadnt had good numbers in the Spring. SO MUCH FOR ALL THAT......the Gators were at nearly full staff, there new players recruits like flag veterans and their vet's played with a youthful spring in their step. With QB Joey Edmonds leading the offense, the Gators scored on each of their first 3 possessions, twice hooking up with the modest and soft spoken Kenny Tinney with what looked like an effortless game of toss. The defense was just as good with each of the line starters recording a sack. The Canes had a few opportunities to keep the game close but a questionable block in the back call on a long gain and a drop on a sure TD were big momentum changers for the Canes. Canes DE Orin Shannon recorded 2 sacks in the loss.
Player of the Game: Joey Edmons, QB, Gators (4 TD passes)
RAIDERS (Waterbury) 27 POKIES (Waterbury) 0
This once was a fierce rivalry that was a must see game for the entire city, but with Pookies having been out of the picture for over a year the yopunger Raiders have taken over their spot as the intimidators of Waterbury. The outcome was never in question as the Raiders moved with ease behind QB Brian Chounairds arm and legs. They also found the endzone on a 65 yd Interception return by Reggie Hunter. Pookies played hard and battled to the end but looked rusty. A few practices and some veterans hitting the gym could be all they need to get their swag back.
Player of the Game: Reggie Hunter, LB/WR, Raiders (65yd INT for TD)
KNIGHTS (Southington) 27 TIG OLE' BITTIES (Danbury) 6
This Matchup could have gone either way from the start with the Tig Ole' Bitties style of play, and personnel relativly unknown to the veteran Knights. A very disciplined defense with various line stunts could have fooled a lesser o-line. The Knights front 3, along with TE Kelvin Riddle (2 td's) provided all the time and scoring opportunities the QB Jon Esmail and the Knights would need. Rob Hernandez got involved with scoring a TD catch late in the first half. Knights stout defense, led by Captain CB #7 and MLB Dan Patterson, provided the Offense with ideal field position. Tig Ole Bitties touchdown came after a long reception which brought them to the 10. Qb Tim Uhl scrambled for the only points of the game. Tig Ole's welcomed the league which is good for them, the Knights are a good barometer for where they stand and where they need to be.
Player of the game: Kelvin Riddle, TE, Knights (2 TD Receptions)
BELL CITY (Bristol) 22 SHARKS (Bristol) 12
Nobody had any idea what to expect out of newcomer Bell City, but we new the Sharks would play anyone tough especially with hometown bragging rights on the line. We didnt receive rosters prior to the game on eithe rteam so info is limited but the Bell City QB was running and throwing all over the field and looked like with a little experience could lead his team into the middle of the pack in the league.
Player of the Game: Bell City QB/CB (2 Td's Passing, 1 INT on Defense)
TROJANS (Meriden) 24 WARRIORS (Southington) 6
The Trojans jumped out to an early lead with QB Sampon Pommachanh hooking up with WR CJ Buchannan and WR Boobie Gil, for a couple scores. TE James "Straight Leg" Brown was effectively used to move the ball down field. The Warriors answered back with QB Dan Balch short TD run. The game looked like it was going to be closer when RB Savino Meluzzo broke a long run down to the 10. But a stout Trojans D led by Chris Pinto, Chris Davey, and Brian Walker stood tough and didnt allow the Warriors in the endzone. Tyler Chamberland and Safety Nick Gothberg played well in the secondary. New addition of RB Dawud Hanif didnt bring the explosiveness needed to give the Warriors what they needed to get by the Trojans that day.
CHARGERS (New Haven) 38 OLD SKOOL (Waterbury) 0
At first glance the Chargers looked like a force to be reckoned with as they picked apart Old Skool with ease, but it soon became apparent that this Old Skool team was not the same team that made it to the semi-finals last fall. Rookie QB Troy Brown led the Chargers with 4 TD passes (2 beautiful bombs to Dialo Freeman) and the defense was relentless as CB Martin Manson took an INT to the crib for another score.
Player of the Game: Troy Brown, QB, Chargers (4 TD passes)
WARRIORS (Southington) 40 OLD SKOOL (Waterbury) 0
This was an old fashioned ass-whooping, PERIOD. New Warrior Dawud Hanif scored almost every way possible with an INT for a TD, a receiving TD and a rushing TD to lead the Warriors. QB Dan Balch found the endzone 3 times and RB savino Melluzzo also ran one in in the romp. Old Skool must find a Qb and get back to their physical play if they are goiing to compete in this league. They have never been a team to lay down or quit and I dont suspect they will start now but changes must be made soon.
Player of the Game: Dawud Hanif, RB/CB, Warriors (INT for a TD, 1 receiving TD and 1 rushing TD)
TROJANS (Meriden) 34 CHARGERS (New Haven) 6
A rematch of last springs chamionship game was far from the epic battle everyone expexted. The Trojans came ready to play and capitalized on several miscues by the Chargers and a lack of depth or O-line. QB Sam Phommachahn hit Boobie Gil on a slant that Gil sprung for a TD after a wicked stiff arm set him free. With just under 3 minutes in the half the Chargers imploded, capped off by a "One in a Mannion" Blocked punt by Trojan S Bill Mannion who came un blocked and took the ball of the shoe of the Chargers opunter and danced into the endzone. The Chargers tried to rally in the second half after a 75 yd INT for a TD form Rich Kirkland(pitch to Riko Roberts) but subsequet drives stalled as the Trojan defensive front of Chris Davey and Chris Pinto reeked havoc on the make shift offensive line. The Trojans look for real this spring and the Chargers are in need of an Oline if they plan on returning to the chip this spring.
Player of the Game: Sam Phommachanh, QB, Trojans (4 Passing TD's, 1 Rushing TD)
