Yesterday, Botelho Insurance and CCFD played at the Coventry Girls Softball League complex at Philips Hill. We played on field one.
Photobucket

Field 1 is 300 feet all the way around. The infield is crushed stone like Atwood and City Park. The ball bounced true in the infield and in the outfield as well.

Field 2 was supposed to be 300 feet, but they ran into a tremendous amount of ledge. The left field line measures 271 and roughly maintains that distance to centerfield. Pretty much it is the same as Foster.

Field 3 is still under construction. It will be 300 feet all the way around. The surface is leveled. The plan is to sift and spread the dirt this summer and put down the seed this year.

Field 4 will be built eventually.

I talked with the Girls Softball President today. They are very interested in partnering with us. He is going to meet with his board and both boards will be meeting this summer to discuss our partnership.

The main issue for them is fundraising. He discussed our participation in a steak fry and maybe a poker tournament to help them raise money.

One fundraiser they are already planning is a golf tournament. This is their tournament, but it could be a great day for us. And the benefits include six teams in one place next year, every Sunday.

Saturday August 20, 9:00AM Start
Wood River Golf Course - Shotgun/Scramble Play
$100 per person = 18 holes, cart, appetizer hour, and dinner

They also have sponsorship opportunities.

it was great to play here and i think we need to step up big time and put some time and effort as a whole league and get this done....i mean cmon what would be better than 6 teams being able to watch botelho quit every other week and peel out of the parking lot

Smitty,
How much help are they looking for? and what guarantees do we have that they won't change their mind after we help with this and other fundraisers?
Sorry for the pessimism but I have been down this road a few times.

tuck, i understand completely.

we haven't gotten to the point of guarantees.

they asked if we would be done with the fields by 1:00. the answer is yes. being a family driven league, they do not use the fields on sundays until the afternoon. essentially, we are filling dead time anyway.

they have their concession stand framed already. they brought up the appeal of having 4-6 teams and their families buying waters etc, from them. in other words, they'd be making money off of us just by letting us on the fields.

they mentioned that they have a ton of fencing that was donated by amgen when they took down their temp. garage.

they also have the dirt on location, it is the huge pile where field 4 will go.

it doesn't seem like supplies are an issue, it is time and labor that is becoming the problem.

again, talks are preliminary. but the way our talks have gone, they have just as much interest in entertaining us as i do in using their fields.

my general feeling is that our participation in these fundraisers is more than a good faith gesture.

when the time is right im going to try and get us on there for fall ball

Good call Dad....I think every team should atleast try to put together a foursome. If not, talk to your sponsor about sponsoring a tee or having a collection from the players and sponsor a hole as a team.

also, we are supposed to be without Washington Oak next year due to the construction/addition of the senior center.

this partnership would allow us to keep our schedule and not have to have two fields with 12:00 games.

actually, we could lose the oak and if we add these two fields we could possibly drop the 1200 at foster

if the third field is ready we could maybe leave hunters which most teams complain about with the new fence.

finally, the girls have the exclusive rights to the property in an agreement they made with the state. the fields are on state land. the town has nothing to do with it. this would help us avoid some of the town nonsense and possibly ease the residency restrictions they throw at me every year.

and like demonti said, no matter what we are helping kids by participating in this golf tournament

and again, if anyone does contribute/put in a foursome, let me know just so i can keep track.

i plan on putting a team in as well, so i should be able see for myself, but a running list would help if negotiations come up.

if you are into the golf tournament, contact rick castore as the flyer says.
he runs the golf tournament for them.

he is not the person to contact to volunteer. there has been some confusion on this.

all volunteer opportunities and work sessions that are negotiated will run through me.

when that time comes, i will post needs and hours and i will have sign ups with me.

please only call rick with golf related info/sponsorships/foursomes

and again, i thank all of you who have already shown a strong interest in helping us, by helping them.

I just talked to Rick this morning. He told me he has room for up to 25 foursomes. He said they only had 6 or 8 last year. All proceeds going to the development of these fields and he's very greatful for anything that our league can do.

I talked with the Girls' President and Vice President last weekend at the complex. We talked about fencing the fields. They have the fencing, but do not have the poles, apparently the most expensive part.

I talked to them about the possibility of playing our Fall Ball games there and having eight teams in one place (4 teams, 2 double headers).

We can not play there without fencing on field 2 because of the rocks. They began talking about fencing that field this year (a change in plans) to get us on that field.

The golf tournament is there best hope to bring in funds. As far as I know we have contributed four foursomes so far. Demonti, Dionne, and two from Shamrock. The league has sponsored a tee and I believe one other member of the league sponsored a tee.

They need registrations by August 1. Please do this sooner rather than later to help out both leagues.

Also, if anyone has any fencing connections (specifically posts) that could be donated or discounted, contact me asap.

emailed with golf tournament director Rick Castore.

he does not have any foursomes officially registered. please do this asap and indicate on the form, you are from the coventry men's softball league.

they haven't had much response so far, so there are plenty of spots available and we could have a great day. feel free to enter your family, or a few teammates, and don't worry about being high quality golfers, we will have a great time.

if every team puts in a foursome, or has one teammate enter with 3 friends, we will help their league and our league.

What is the estimate on the fence posts? Maybe if they let us play fall or a tournament there free of charge we can take the fees from that and put them toward the posts.

Fund Raising idea: a one hole mini golf 50/50. $20 gets you one shot into the Fack-O-Lanterns gape. Put out the candle, split the pot.

OK, I did my part and sent them a sponsorship today. I would hope maybe some of the sponsors in the league could also do the same.

This is something we should want to do anyways, helping out the girls teams in Coventry is a good idea.

If every player could pony up 5 or 10 bucks that would be at least a 1k donation aside from whoever does what for the golf tourney.

We will benefit in the long run. I'm sure they are looking at us as a help to them both financially and volunteering to finish the fields.

I just talked to Rick. He didn't give specifics as to how many sponsors or foursomes we as a league contributed but he did say they have 19 foursomes as opposed to just 10 last year. He did say he was happy with sponsorships we contributed as well.

This is great to know that they're happy with us helping out their tournament and raising money for fields which hopefully we'll be sharing with them.
