| First off, I've been an umpire for 10+ years and I know how tough of a job it is. Consistency is always key.
However, last night the plate umpire for the Laker/Patriot game was brutal. Not only was he inconsistent, but his zone was the size of a Campbell Soup can. I don't mind the fact that you don't call the black. But when the ball goes over the middle of the plate, you better be calling it a strike. This happen several times, and each time the pitch was called a ball.
Umpires dream of when a pitcher is consistently painting corners, has good control, and a great pace for the game. It makes the game a lot easier to call, the game doesn't take 3 hours, and honestly it's easy money. Why try to make it harder than it has to be? You are looking for strikes, not balls.
So to the umpire behind the plate, get off your high horse, this isn't MLB, and punch a hole in that damn mask if you can't figure out what's a ball and what's a strike. I hope you learn from it and bring a better performance the nice time you're behind the plate.
