| WARRIORS 19 TIG OL BITTIES 6
Last year both of these teams turned heads with impressive spring seasons, both came into opening day with high expectations for the new year. The Warriors, with do everything backup QB Chase Mayoussuer at the helm, scored first on a Moose keeper and jumped up 7-0. After that both offenses were shut down by solid defensive play for much of the half. T.O.B got on the board when TE/HB Tim Uhl took a toss and opted to pass down field to a wide open Leon Breece bringing the score to 7-6. Again the defenses held until just inside of the 2-minute warning the Warriors found the endzone again, this time on a Tyler Chamberlain rushing TD. Trailing 13-6 T.O.B moved the ball down the field and with 10 seconds remaining face a 4th and goal. QB Kerry Palmer was flushed right and had to throw off balance, the ball was intercepted in the endzone for Chamberlain who then eluded the entire offense and took it back for the score and the game ender!
STEELERS 32 BRASS HORSE SAINTS 6
The Steelers come to town looking to win the only Chip that is not in the trophy case for them......Waterbury. The Saints on the other hand have long been a Waterbury power but come into the year with many question marks as nearly a half dozen top players have moved on to other teams. The Steelers came out swinging led by QB Jaime "Rocket" Bryant and WR Anrae Fervier. Fervier to a screen pass 65 yards for a core and the Steelers never looked back. Trailing 19-0 the Saints Rob Saunders got them on the board with a scoring strike to cut the score to 19-6 but that was as close as they would get as the defense did not have any answers on this day.
CANES 31 BELL CITY CHIEFS 0
When the Chiefs got to the field and had 15-20 guys it looked as though they were ready to step out of the basement in the GCFFA, but numbers arent everything and the team looked unprepared vs the veteran Canes. QB Moe Ramos threw for 3 TD's, one each to Reggie Hunter, Terry Smith and Shaun Smith in the blowout. Ray Hunter and Brian Chouinard also scored on the ground for the new look Southside Canes. Unfortunetly there was nothing of note for the Chiefs
CHARGERS 20 SPARTANS 18
What many thought would be a laugher turned out to be one of the best games of the day as the revamped Spartans gave the undermanned Chargers everything they can handle and then some. Spartans QB Phil Cushon had a great game plan and his athletic ability gave him the critical extra time he needed to make plays as the Spartans jumped out to a 12-7 lead. The Chargers Mike Colavito was able to find Pat Hussey in the endzone for 13-12 midway through the 2nd half but Cushon put together a length of the field drive that was capped off by his 2nd rushing TD of the day and an 18-13 Spartans lead with under a minute to play. The comeback kid wouldnt let the Chargers go down that easy and used timeouts and the sideline to get the Chargers inside the 10 yard line. facing a 4th and goal with 9 seconds remaining, Colavito threw a strike to Diallo Freeman just beyond the pylon for the score and the win.
CANES 20 HAWKS 18
The newest GCFFA team the Hawks came in with some fan fair as word of an explosive QB and some speedsters circulated the league. The Canes, in their 2nd game of the day came out firing and quickly jumped on top 14-0. The Hawks werent gonna back down and after 2 long TD's from as advertised Dave Godek to WR Stevie Dunbar they were right back in it. After exchanging TD's the score sat 20-18 and the Hawks had the ball with a chance top win, driving all the way down to the Canes 5 yard line but sacks on 2nd down and 4th down by DE Fabian ended the comeback hopes.
BRONCOS 28 BELL CITY CHIEFS 14
The Broncos came into the game as pretty much an unknown although many expected to see a few former Canes, Longhorns and Young Gunz together. With Tony Morales sitting at safety for the Bronc's and what looked like no playbook from the Chief you could see where this one was going......Morales had not one but 2 interceptions returned for TD's in the first half and QB Sean Walton had two TD's threw the air, 1 to Matt McCaulley and another to Todd "Showtime" Hill as the Broncos cruised to a 28-14 win. Rosters were not available for the Chiefs so scoring and stats made it difficult for a write up.
