| There was a controversial call in the Saints/Highland game yesterday.
Foul tip with two strikes, off the catcher's mitt, off his shoulder, and caught barehanded by the catcher without touching the ground.
Umpires meet to discuss, rule the ball did not hit the ground and made an out call.
The batter then claims the catcher has to catch the ball cleanly in his glove, umpires meet to discuss again and change the call to a foul ball.
For any umpires who are listening...so the call can be made right next time, "a foul tip is a batted ball that goes sharp and direct from the bat to the catcher'?s hands and is legally caught. It is not a foul tip unless caught and any foul tip that is caught is a strike, and the ball is in play. It is not a catch if it is a rebound, unless the ball has first touched the catcher?'s glove or hand."
So whatever, no harm no foul, the batter struck out in the end (fastball looking, right down the heart of the plate). But I thought other umpires should know since the umpires yesterday were not well informed.
Here is a link to a MLB glossary of terms in case baseballguy23 wants to claim I made it up.

| It is certainly nice to see an umpire join the fray.
Since we have you here could you please quote exactly what constitutes the strike zone from your glossary of terms.
I believe most of us are confused game in and game out.
Thanks

| So, if I understand you correctly on this call.
Since the ball never hit the ground, the batter should be out. Correct?
or are you saying, since the ball never directly went into the mitt, it should be a foul???

| What he's trying to say is: if the ball hits the catchers glove first and then does not hit the ground it is considered a caught foul tip and the batter is out. But say, it were to hit the catchers chest and then bounce into his glove, it would be a foul ball.
Either way, if you're a hitter and an ump calls you out and then let's you continue your at bat. You better swing at the next pitch.
