So far, Reagan, Varela, American should be automatic. Most likely, Columbus, Coral Reef and Jackson ....the other two I have no idea.

This has been the first year recent Honduran immigrant Richar Padilla has played on
an actual soccer team. Not only has he proven
his skills throughout the season, he led the Jackson boys’ soccer team to the
GMAC semifinals with a 2-0 victory over Reagan on
Monday afternoon. Padilla scored his 28th goal
this season early in the second half. Jose Cruz scored the final goal for the Generals
(13-3-4) with 10 minutes left. Junior Padilla picked up his eighth shutout. “We had good and strong defense, we’re fortunate to
have the win,” Jackson coach James Willenborg said. This is Willenborg’s first
season at Jackson and his team only has five returning players. Most of the other 15
players have recently immigrated from Honduras, like Padilla. “Most of these kids have experience only in street play with friends, they’ve
never really represented a school team. So it’s great watching them come so far because their skill set has always been there it’s all just
about adapting to the team,” Willenborg said.
Jackson faces American at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the final. Willenborg was the coach at American before joining Jackson, and took American
to the state final in 1999.

SOCCER | GMAC SEMIFINALS
Columbus, American move to final
BY ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ
a1fernandez@MiamiHerald.c

The Columbus and American High boys’ soccer
teams are both dealing with injuries and fatigue.
Neither let it slow down their bids for a GMAC championship Tuesday night. Columbus, which played
its fifth match in a one week span, defeated Dr.
Krop 1-0 on senior Tyler Zarranz’s goal in the ninth minute of a GMAC semifinal at Milander Park.
The Explorers (16-3-3) will vie for their first
GMAC championship Thursday night when they
take on American in the tournament final at 7 p.m.
at Milander. American (15-1-1) defeated
Jackson in the earlier semifinal Tuesday, 2-1.
The hero in that game, junior Camilo Rojas, has
dealt with numerous injuries during his career. Yet when he’s been in the lineup for American, he has found a way to deliver clutch plays like the one he made Tuesday when he fired a near-40-yard kick into the back of the net in the 70th minute for what proved to be the match winning goal.
American coach Richie Pelaez said Rojas has dealt
with injuries to his back and hamstring this season but has played most of the season following a sophomore year in which he missed several games due to a broken wrist. Rojas also
missed games his freshman season with an ankle injury. “The kid has it as far as
talent, it’s just keeping him on the field,” Pelaez said. “I’m always like, ‘Give me
what you can,’ and he’s pulled it through. He knows his limits, but he steps up
for this team.” Rojas’ goal broke a 1-1 tie
against Jackson (13-4-4), which upset Reagan in
Monday’s quarterfinals. Sophomore Matias Pastore
scored the first goal for American off an assist by Neiver Baena. Zarranz, who also scored
a goal for Columbus in Monday’s quarterfinal win
over Varela, delivered early Tuesday. Behind a solid defensive effort in the second half anchored by goalkeeper Steven Milian, Columbus
held off the Lightning. Senior Eddy Diaz, a pivotal part of the Explorers’ title run last season, had an assist. Columbus, the defending
Class 5A state champions, appears to be playing
its best soccer in recent weeks. “We’re grinding through some injuries and fatigue right now,” Columbus coach Michael Stewart said. “We’re starting to realize we have to gel as a team.’’

Great game tonight between two very good teams, Columbus and American, in the final of the GMAC Boy Tournament.

Congratulations to both teams, good luck in the playoffs, and hopefully both will make to their respective Class State Finals.

Explorers win 1st GMAC title
BY ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ
a1fernandez@MiamiHerald.com

first boys’ soccer state championship, Columbus
still had a couple of goals it
had yet to accomplish.
Scratch a county championship
off that list.
On the strength of Andrew
Fernandez’s late firsthalf
goal, the Explorers won
their first GMAC tournament
title Thursday night
with a 1-0 win over American
at Milander Park.
“This team continues to
be the one to make history
in soccer for our school,”
Columbus coach Michael
Stewart said. “We keep making
firsts, and hopefully
soon we will make seconds.
This was a match against a
very good, well coached
squad, and it could have
gone either way tonight.”
In a few weeks, the Explorers
are hoping to start
working on a repeat of a
more prestigious
achievement.
The road to potential
back-to-back Class 5A state
titles begins in next week’s
District 15-5A tournament,
which begins Tuesday.
And Stewart knows it
won’t be easy.
The Explorers (17-3-3) are
the No. 2 seed in the district
behind top-seed Reagan,
which was upset by Miami
Jackson in the GMAC
quarterfinals.
And Columbus must face
rival and No. 3-seed Coral
Gables in a district semifinal
elimination game Wednesday
at 5 p.m. at Memorial
Field in Miami Beach.
Stewart is hoping his
team learned from a tough
two-week stretch in which it
played six tough matches including
wins over Varela,
Dr. Krop and American
(15-2-1) in the GMAC
tournament.
“I think we’ve learned we
have to be alert on the field,”
Stewart said. “You have to
stay alert and play in the moment,
no matter who you
are playing.”
Fernandez’s free kick goal
ricocheted off an American
defender standing as part of
the defensive wall in front of
the goal for the game’s lone
score.
Columbus goalkeeper
Steven Milian recorded his
eighth shutout of the season.
But it was American senior
goalkeeper Jacobo Velez
that kept the game close,
making several tremendous
defensive stops for the Patriots.
American is hoping his
stellar play continues as the
Patriots enter next week’s
District 15-4A tournament at
Pembroke Pines Charter.
“[Velez] is a big-time
player,” Stewart said. “Had
he not made some of those
saves, we would have had
two or three goals instead of
just that one. He is tremendous,
and playing against
him was huge for us with
what’s coming up for us.”
