| Championship game review
Flashback to Tuesday October 25th, 2 days before the championship game between Air Raid and BVM. A private meeting is being held with attendees names being withheld from the media. Some excerpts from the conversation were secretly taped by Billy “Trump” Bean. “What should we do, we can’t have a rookie captain with a rookie MVP wanna be as our champions?. I know that Air Raid has a good team but can they beat BVM at full strength. Do you know what it will look like to past and present players if we let a rookie captain win. I think we need to call in a “favor” and make sure that Air Raid wins” says the ringleader of this rag tag group. “I don’t think we should do that” says another member of the group. “BVM has won about every game and they have won them convincingly. Can’t we just see what happens?” “That’s a really bad idea” says another member. “We need to make sure Air Raid wins but I am tired of paying the refs off. Did you see what happened in Mondays game between Godfathers and BVM. I slipped Al a $20 bill at halftime to make sure Godfathers would get the calls to win the game. Our plan was working great till Reggie lost his mind on Al with about 6 minutes to go in the game. The score was 42-41 at the time but Reggie went all nuclear on Al and that was the game. We need a full proof plan.” “I will take care of this but I will make it look like an accident” says the ringleader. “ I know people who can take care of situations just like this”. The group is very wary of this but they figure they need to toe the company line. The next day, Tonya “Raz” Harding calls Nancy “Kenneth” Kerrigan “Hey, Kenneth,” starts the conversation, “ I’m playing ball at Denny’s tonight and we only have 9, can you play” “Raz,” says Kenneth,” I would love to, but Dontino called me today and told me to stay fresh for the championship game tomorrow night. I don’t want to disappoint him and I already played ball one night this week and with a new born at home, I just don’t think it’s a good idea to be playing tonight.” “Kenneth” says Raz, “ do you know how hard it is to get into Denny’s gym? He will be pissed at me if I don’t find a 10th person. You are the best player I know. Why don’t you play at half speed, only play offense and just stand and shoot. That way I will get invited back to Denny’s the next time he plays” “All right, I’ll go” says Kenneth, “ but don’t tell Dontino I played”. 2 hours later, Kenneth and Raz show up at Dennys to play and Kenneth does exactly as he was told. He only plays on offense and just shoots the ball. As they are playing the last game, Kenneth goes up to shoot and feels a sharp pain in his foot and has to be carried out of the gym. Somewhere in the corner, Raz can be seen typing away on his phone. The BBL is safe again as a rookie captain will not win the BBL championship. Here is how the game unfolded last night First the start time is negotiated to 830-845pm as Morton and Bruce both are coaching their kids teams and the their game didn’t start on time. The game finally starts at 915ish. BVM was not going to let Michael beat them down low. Every time he touched the ball, he was triple teamed and had no room to shoot. BVM looked at the stats from Mondays game and saw that Clayton shot 3 for 12 from 3 point range and BVM decided they would let Air Raid try to beat them from the outside. Bad choice as Clayton had a career night and shot 5 for 7 from 3 and finished with a team high 17 points. When he was hitting, Art was hitting from outside as well, he finished with 15 points with 3 -3 pointers as well. Art also had a season low of 3 times on the floor, with 2 of them being blocks and one being a charge. Smitty did his usual thing, slashing and crashing on offense, getting out on the break and he finished with 14 points. Michael finished with a season low 6 points and 10 rebounds but it didn’t matter as Air Raid pulled away in the second half for a 68-49 victory. Kocher smiled the entire second half as he watched his team finish off the season in spectacular fashion. In his post game interview he took all the credit for the team he drafted. “I knew we would start the season slow but I knew we would gel at the end of the season and play our best ball. I hope Kenneth makes a full recovery but I am just happy that I don’t have that moniker on me anymore that Hunt and Villanti have. Only captains not to win a championship.” BVM played their hearts and shot the ball very well in the first half but just couldn’t the pace up in the second half. Air Raid had subs and BVM played with 5 and it was just too much to overcome. Kenneth watched in despair on the sidelines as Dontino glared at him every time he went up and down the court. Kenneth doesn’t know it, but Dontino will never talk to him again. On Friday morning, Villanti called Kocher and told him that the championship plaque would have an asterick beside since he didn’t beat BVM at full strength. Kocher couldn’t hear a word he was saying because he was hugging the trophy so tight. Good season to all and I look forward to next season. Lets get that draft order set
