| It was off to Concord Regional Park on Friday to see the Martingrove Sox take on the Vaughan Vikings. In a game that was close until the bottom of the 5th, the Vikings eventually pulled away for a 9-0 win.
In the top of the 1st, some shoddy Vaughan defense allowed the bases to become loaded, but Jon Theisen recorded a key strikeout to end the threat. Theisen would end up going 5 strong shutout innings and only allowed 3 hits. He also singled and tripled and drove in four runs. Luca Paese pitched two scoreless innings to close it out.
Kengo Saeki continued his string of strong outings against Vaughan by keeping most of the hitters off balance the first time through the order. Vaughan made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second as Brian Rocha crushed a ball to dead centre field, and Linden Feist almost made an incredible sliding catch but he couldn't quite hang on and 2 runs came in on the double.
The Vikings scored another run in the 3rd before blowing it open with six more in the fifth.
Yesterday, we covered Martingrove's start to the year, so today we will talk a bit about Vaughan.
The defending champion Vikings are 7-4 but a number of rainouts as well as absences have factored into their relatively uneven start to the season. All the key pieces remain in place for another deep playoff run.
The pitching staff has been anchored by Theisen, Jett Bui, and newcomer Jordan Ferazzo. On offense, Theisen leads the way with a.588 average and 10 RBIs while Julian Testani is batting .458 with 11 stolen bases.
