Welcome to week 2 of our season and week 1 of the Prediction Pool. Rules were posted last week so check Prediction Pool Week 1 if you need a refresher. Basically you pick the games, cost is $20 for the season, winner gets our money.

Stars (1-0) vs Oilers (0-1)

Four of the leagues 7 Calder trophy eligibles hit the scoresheet this week but none made the impression that Iceton did, 3 goals and an assist in his first ever HRHL game. He was placed on a line with 2 time scoring champ Haverstock which may have helped his cause. Havey had 1 goal and 3 assists, exactly the same stats he had in game 1 last season. Tim Ryan just keeps scoring goals his snipe this week gives him 283 for his career. That puts him only 17 goals away from becoming just the third player in HRHL recorded history to score 300 goals. Gallant won the lottery again this season, getting to play along side Haverstock after being Veinot’s centerman last year. He had 1 assist, is that enough to keep him on the top line? Gilbert made his rookie debut and it was a success by all accounts as he had an assist and the team won. He is no Iceton, but hey, we can’t all dominate in our career openers. He did make one huge rookie mistake in the room he sat next to the cooler on a team that has Tony McNeil on a day that Tony had arranged a designated driver. Lesson learned. Murphy has an assist to round out the Stars scoring. 11 seasons ago in 2015 Murphy was a member of the Stars, that is the last team he played for before becoming a member of the Flames coaching staff. When he left, he gave 1 piece of advice to Stars management, buy Bitcoin. Tony and Tim looked at the beer funds and figured they couldn’t afford any as they were up to $230 per coin and they only had $500 in the fund. I wonder how big the Shore Club team party would be now if only they took his advice? O’Hearn is the only Stars rookie who didn’t record a point in his career opener but he did get on the score sheet with a nifty little holding penalty. Haverstock is up for a silver stick this season as he is now just 26 points away from 200 in his HRHL career, his teammate Murphy created the first gold stick award, maybe he could share the story with the Stars so Havey has something to look forward to. The Oilers have lost their season opener 2 years in a row we all know how last season ended so no panic yet. Well Skinny might have been panicking a bit but no one else was. LeBlanc led the way for the Oil with 2 goals, linemates Bent and Skinner each had 2 helpers. Corkill scored 1 and his linemates Longo and Veinot each had an assist. Skinny and Sto are off this week, heading to NL for a wedding or some such foolishness. Look for them both to be demoted to the farm team if this shit keeps up. Daly is the Oilers lone rookie and he was held off of the game sheet. League VP Longo is the only Oiler who looks likely to hit a career milestone this season as he sits just 6 points away from the gold stick 300 point level. Good luck to everyone who is within reach of a career milestone, Murphy get to building bud, there are a dozen possible candidates.

Oilers 4 – Stars 3

Jets (0-0-1) vs Ratpack (0-1)

Itchy returns and has 2 assists in the season opener, one of them may have been a phantom assist. Hype Train scored the first goal of the HRHL season, a beautiful solo effort by all accounts in the stands. Unfortunately for everyone who took place in the season opening goal pool no one selected Tran. Pot will be huge next season with the carry over. Hiep brought his entire family out to the game and put on a show for them, If I had known bringing family leads to goals it would have looked like a Webber family reunion in the stands. MacEachern scored the other Jets goal and Turple had an assist. Turple’s apple gave him 100 points for his career, he is the first player this season to reach one of the award worthy plateaus as he grabs the Bronze stick. Stay tuned as he isn’t the only one to secure a stick award this week. Other Jets within striking distance of an award are Tracey, 7 away from 200, Orser 8 away from 200 and Pecarski who is just 4 away from 100. Proline pays 68.25 on Orser getting there first. The Ratpack picked no rookies so the best they can do is a returning Rick Flinn, he takes a year off and comes back to have his best game ever with 2 goals and an assist. Did he take the year off to go to full time hockey school? MacQueen also had a 3 point opener with a goal and 2 helpers. Glazebrook had 2 assists, if his linemate was anywhere close to game shape he would have had 5 for fun. Parsons scored 1 and single assists went to Kerr, Munden and States. Kerr’s assist was his first point as a non-captain since the 2007 season when he was the 2nd overall pick behind only Ritcey. The following season he was selected 4th overall and then made a captain at the draft by his co-captain Joe Masterman. It has been a great run for Tim but he may not go second overall again. He did get a hole in one this week so he might be the second overall pick for your HRHL golf team, still second fiddle to Ritz. The Rats are missing several guys this week and are already asking about the rules for spares. Just to help out I will post them at the end of this write up. No Rat is inline to reach an award worthy point number this season unless Glazebrook can bang out 59 points, he has done it before so not out of the realm but it is going to take a great season. These 2 point nights won’t do it and missing this week hurts the chances. Hard to make this pick as we have no idea who 5 guys missing for the Rats are, my guess is Glazebrook, Hill, Chappy, Pudge and someone unknown, seems like a big hump to get over.

Jets 2 – Ratpack 2

Lions (1-0) vs Flames (1-0)

The Lions have officially petitioned the league to move their games to the Forum. How could a team look so dominant in preseason and then look like that in the first real game? Burgess led the Lions with a goal and an assist, Billard scored 1 and Ritcey had an assist. New rule this year, shootout goals are counting towards regular season point totals. Well most shootout goals are. If you score in a shootout, you will get credit for a goal, if you score more than once in a single shootout you only get credit for 1 goal. Messervey becomes the first player ever to get credit as he buries the shootout winner and is the only shooter to score. Congratulations Messervey, two awards in one night, one for being the first shootout point recognized by the league and another for setting a record for quickest time to lose it at a ref. Good thing Ricky doesn’t like to call penalties on Ashburn members, if that was Parsons he would have been booted out. There are lots of Lions up for awards at the banquet this season. Hartnett needs just 9 points to reach 200, Currie needs 4 to reach 100. Anyone remember Currie’s first draft night when he was placing bets that he would score 25, that was 7 years ago at the 2019 draft and he is just now approaching 100 points. My guess is he isn’t the guy who did the HRHL Reddit ratings. Ingraham needs 22 points to reach the 100 mark. This last one I am not sure of Ritcey needs 36 to reach 900. It isn’t that I am not sure he will do it, my doubt is about what kind of mineral is used to signify the 9th level. Bronze, Silver, Gold all easy. Platinum for fourth, sure. Diamond fifth. Just making it up after that Palladium, Iridium, Ruthenium, Osmium who knows. We are going to call 900 points Rhodium, that is what they use in catalytic converters, Murphy you better get to work on getting enough of this to make a stick. The Lions have no rookies so no rookie points. The Flames new management has their first ever victory under their belt and they beat the defending champs to do it. Top line of Baxter, Bray and Fougere each had a goal and an assist. Manson had 2 apples in his rookie debut and Newcombe scored once in his. Coombs scored 1 and Ashley had a helper. Grease becomes the first goalie to hit the score sheet this year with an assist. Two members of the Flames are up for milestone awards this season, well one really as Bray was just 1 point away from 200 career points and he achieved that in the first period of game 1. Fougere needs 28 points to reach 300 for his career, coincidentally 28 points is exactly how many he had last season, can he repeat that and reap the reward of a golden stick? Gilby was the only rookie no show and he is also the guy that no one was able to get a read on, will this mystery man show this week? Is he even real or did the Flames create a fake player and then draft him just so they could get more ice time?

Flames 3 – Lions 2

Shootout scoring race:

Messervey 1
Everyone else - 0

Spare rues:

You can pick up spares to give you a total of 9 skaters, if you dress more than 9 with a spare the game will be forfeited, no excuses like guys arriving late. Spares are only allowed to come from other teams in the league, no outside players. Teams can only pick up spares that were drafted in the same round or lower than the guy being replaced. Goalies are an exception. The goalie spare rule is you can ask any goalie in the league or on the spare list. You can also ask a goalie not on the spare list but they must meet the league minimum age of 35 and they must be willing to be put on the spare list. You cannot pick up a goalie that will play for your team and not spare for any other team. You can pick up a goalie under 35 if you have exhausted all other avenues but they cannot become regulars or go on the spare list or be used more than once by your team.

Side Notes:

By now you know I am a Steelers fan. I do not like Aaron Rogers but I will live with him for a season if he can score 4 touchdowns every week. I still don’t like him.

Once again great joy in my house, the Patriots lose after spending the most money in the off season. Not just a loss but a loss to the lowly Raiders and at home no less. The ghost of Tom Brady will haunt Patriot fans forever. That was a once in a lifetime ride, hope you enjoyed it.

Jays fans are nervous, no need, they have achieved way more than expected this year and they are a lock to make the playoffs. Don’t get greedy, just enjoy it. Has Parsons started watching again? Atkins and Shapiro are still there and he vowed not to watch until they were gone but it would be tough to ignore what is happening this year.

My recommendation for shows to watch is topped by Mobland, just one season so far but Tom Hardy and Pierce Brosnan are excellent. Helen Mirren plays evil extremely well.

The new Dexter was just Ok I am a fan of the show so I binged it but it is running it’s course.

Little bit of a drought out there, poor fuckers in Dartmouth are going to be forced to cut back on water if it doesn’t end soon. No more grow op for Glennie.

Ebola is braking out in the Congo, let’s see how many Americans can survive that without a vaccine.

I took Derrick Henry in one of my fantasy drafts, didn’t want to but needed an RB and he was the best available. That might work out well.

As a Steelers fan it warmed my heart to see the Ravens blow a game that should have been over. Even the Bills fans mostly left the stadium.

What the Hell happened to the Dolphins, Getting wrecked by Indy and Daniel Jones, just wow.

Story is McDavid will sign for fewer years but at $16 million per season. Want to know why Crosby won, he wasn’t a greedy fuck. I like McDavid but he and Draisaitl are giving that team no chance to win with their salary demands. See Toronto Maple Leafs.

If the Jays can’t make the World Series I would love to see Milwaukee vs Seattle. Let the little guy win one.

For years the wife and I went to a movie almost every Saturday afternoon. Now with Streaming services paying all the talent to be on TV the movies have gone to shit. We may go once every 6 weeks or so and half the time it is just because I am jonesing for theatre popcorn.

Two too many men penalties this week, not hard to tell it is week one and the bench bosses are out of sync.

Good luck to all who enter the pool, the rest of you are dead to me. It is $20, cheap bastards. You don’t need to do a write up, pick your 3 winners and be done. For those who do a write up, even a quick blurb, it is appreciated, I understand the time commitment it takes, believe me.

Weekly 3 Stars………

3. Logan , 24 saves including all 3 in the Shootout as the lions start the year with a win. Pat is a calming influence on the terrible lions defence and they need him to keep stepping up . Did you you know Logan is also a defenceman on the Monday night Stewtennials?
What an athlete !!

2. Coombs, scores 1 and it wasn’t just a shit goal , it was fuckin brilliant, goal of the night end to end. The flames knew they were getting a solid defender in this guy but even they were shocked at the Cale Makar snipe. Solid pick grabbing this versatile player

1. Iceton, 3 goals and 1 assist in his first ever HRHL game. It maybe the greatest performance ever by a rookie in the first game of the year. How the fuck did the stars get this guy in the 5 th round??
I guess some teams don’t scout like we do I guess.
Havey and Iceton and Larry assume the mantle as leagues top line so far.
For winning this prestigious award Darren you receive a beer card bought by PSP construction, and a free skate sharpening card from sport check .
Congrats bud what a debut!!!

Morning y'all!

Welcome back to the best league in the city regardless of what some no name fucker thinks. Newbies....stick around after games, get on the discussion board, talk to folks you don't know and you will find out why this league has been my home for 31 years now. It's the best way to spend a Friday night.

I am the VP of the league with discipline being my main job. It's really easy for you. Don't act like an ass, and I won't have to suspend you. If you lose your cool, treat refs like shit, have to show you are a man or any of that kind of shit then don't complain to me when you are punished. This is not a "stupid fucking league" because you were dumb. It is successful exactly because we don't put up with bullshit. If you don't like it we can replace your ass.
Just a note that I won't be the one dealing with incidents that happen with my own team cause I don't want anyone thinking I am biased.

All that said, have a great season.

Have any of you seen this dumb ass broad on the Tim's commercial who is all confused by her free coffee only to find out she got it on reward points? What a stupid ad....and not even a hot broad so there's that.

Parsehole was all worked up at the TENA piss pads advertised on TSN during the US OPEN. I know Parse is always pissed, but was it because he has been soiling himself without protection all these years and just found out there is a solution?

I took young Iceton under my wing much like I did Havey in his inaugural season and here we go. I told him he would have a blast, but didn't predict that after only a week he would be so famous. Hard for him to walk the streets of Sprytown these days!

Timmy Ryan breaks his own record for years in a row promising his teammates that he is going to get them all back the next year only to draft an entirely new team. Don't be offended next year STARS, I think he really means it....the year after he finally hoists a trophy.

I fucking hate Wolverines, but if JJ can continue to look like he did when it mattered I might make an exception. Poor Sam Darnold was doing exactly what the Seahawks needed from him and then late fumble when they can easily tie or win. Dumb or unlucky?

Bob loves Aaron Rodgers. I hate that Great Gazoo helmet looking fucker.

I am watching the 2026 Superbowl Champion Vikings last week and the announcers are blowing their load all over the Bears. To quote the great Dennis Green, " They are who we thought they were!" Caleb Williams after score one was strutting and stuff. What a loser. Prove something for more than one drive and we will talk.

Gotta go. Don't forget to carpool so you can have some drinks and yell at the West Coast game each week boys!

Oilers win
Jets win
Flames win. (I think they might be the second best team. They must be to beat the Oilers, although we only started playing 10 minutes in.)

Week. Two.

One whole week is in the books as far as the 2025-2026 HRHL season is concerned and Week One’s frozen array of skates did not disappoint. Last Friday saw the dazzled denizens of the Greater Fairview Area treated to three solid games and some surprising results to begin the year.

While a few players will only make their season debuts in Week Two, almost of the league’s stars (both new and returning) were out and shining bright as the Stewtennial’s finest got back at again.

All in all, this year is shaping up to be a classic. As such, here’s a song from Q104 favourite / late classic rock legend Tom Petty that kinda captures how each HRHL franchise might be feeling so far this young season.

The season is well underway. The prediction pool starts for real now. On to the games…

Stars (1-0-0 2 points)
@
Oilers (0-1-0 0 points)

The early game this week features last year’s locked-and-loaded defending champion VeinBros versus a talented Shiny Brights outfit that looked impressive in their first game (and features two of the hottest rookies in the league).

Skinner’s Winners, even after a surprising opening week loss to the Flames know they’ve “got somethin’” with their current roster, but are nonetheless likely feeling “kicked around some” a la the Tom Petty classic and know they don’t have to live like a “REFUGEE” all year with their talent:

We got somethin', we both know it
We don't talk too much about it
Ain't no real big secret all the same
Somehow we get around it

Listen, it don't really matter to me, baby
You believe what you want to believe

You see, you don't have to live like a refugee
(Don't have to live like a refugee)

Somewhere, somehow, somebody
Must have kicked you around some
Tell me why you wanna lay there
And revel in your abandon

After an impressive win over the nattily-attired RatPack that featured a rookie hat trick and an empty-netter that ultimately proved to be the GWG after a late RatPack tally, all while missing their starting goaler and having to use some scrub named Grease in nets, the Tim and Tony-led Stars were likely “feel[ing] like heaven” and the hardest part of their week was simply going to be “THE WAITING” to get back on the ice and do it all over again:

Oh baby, don't it feel like heaven right now?
Don't it feel like something from a dream?
Yeah, I've never known nothing quite like this
Don't it feel like tonight might never be again?
Baby, we know better than to try and pretend
Honey no one coulda ever told me 'bout this

I said yeah, yeah (Yeah, yeah)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part

Oilers 2 – Stars 1

Jets (0-0-1 1 point)
@
Ratpack (0-1-0 0 points)

This week’s sandwich skate features a Jets franchise looking to take flight versus a RatPack squad currently trapped near the bottom of the league standings.

Jets management made some bold choices and employed an unconventional and strategy at this year’s HRHL draft, stocking up on defensemen and even taking a defender albeit the reigning league MVP with their first-round pick. There were questions all around. But after last week’s heart-breaking OT loss against a ferocious-looking Lions squad, Croke and Duke feel that maybe, just maybe, it’s all coming together for the Supersonics and they are truly “LEARNING TO FLY” (even if some guys who usually play D are patrolling the wings):

I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing

Well, the good old days may not return
And the rocks might melt and the sea may burn

I'm learning to fly (Learning to fly)
But I ain't got wings (Learning to fly)
Coming down (Learning to fly)
Is the hardest thing (Learning to fly)

Well, some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I've started out for God knows where
I guess I'll know when I get there

While the end result wasn’t what they wanted, the RatPack room was still optimistic post-game after their Week one loss, feeling like a bounce here or there may have made for a different result. With their current roster, the dedicated new owner they have in place, and the spiffy new uniforms they are sporting, those gold and navy bastards still feel they are in the midst of “RUNNIN’ DOWN A DREAM”:

I felt so good, like anything was possible
Hit cruise control and rubbed my eyes
The last three days, the rain was unstoppable
It was always cold, no sunshine

Yeah, runnin' down a dream
That never would come to me
Workin' on a mystery
Goin' wherever it leads
Runnin' down a dream

RatPack 2 – Jets 1

Lions (1-0-0 2 points)
@
Flames (1-0-0 2 points)

The west coast match-up this week is a question of who’ll roar the loudest.

After a somewhat dominant exhibition game performance resulted in something looking more like a lopsided NFL score than a hockey game, the HartCats looked surprisingly flat before downing a determined Jets crew in the shootout. Don’t be fooled. While they know now they can’t take “the easy way out”, this group is loaded with talent and absolutely “WON’T BACK DOWN” to any team this season:

Well, I won't back down
No, I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of Hell
But I won't back down
No, I'll stand my ground
Won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground
And I won't back down

(I won't back down)
Hey, baby, there ain't no easy way out
(I won't back down)
Hey, I will stand my ground (Ooh)
And I won't back down

A massive win in their first ever game under new management, versus the defending champs no less, has the Flames feeling like they are somewhere “in between a memory and a dream”. Baxter and Manson may be new to running an HRHL squad, but they have their group ready to “head on down the road” towards a title. Unless you are wearing the jersey, “YOU DON’T KNOW HOW IT FEELS” (in a good way) to be a member of the re-born RedHots right about now. That’s for sure:

People come, people go
Some grow young, some grow cold
I woke up in between
A memory and a dream

So let's get to the point, let's roll another joint
And let's head on down the road, there's somewhere I gotta go
You don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels to be me

Stars /oilers…….. longtime rivals collide here and the stars take this battle 5-3. Two for Havey , Macneil and a motivated Larry scores against his former squad. Dan also pumped about beating the old team makes 31 saves in the win.

Jets/mousetraps……. Depending on who you believe the traps are missing everyone, considering 5 stars members were asked to play. So if this holds somewhat true I’m thinking the jets will grind out a 2-1 win . Perry and Ross do the damage and Findlay does the rest. Jets will battle hard every night in low scoring trapping affairs .

Flames /lions…….. two teams coming off wins so something has to give here. The flames scorch the lions 4-3 in a spirited affair in the west coast game . Red hot Baxter’s scores one, bray two and rookie Gilby debuts with a pair. The flames have a big team and they will be physical to play against for sure
