Lions (7-8) vs Jets (5-8-2) Lions lead season series 2-1

What a coincidence, biggest mid-season trade the league has seen since 2017 and the teams involved get to face each other and evaluate the trade right away. If you live in a box and haven’t heard, the Lions traded Ritcey and Messervey to the Jets for Turple and Itchy. Could this be a trade that helps both teams? The Lions have the most goals against and pick up the reigning (4 years in a row) Norris winner and a guy who should be a defenceman who was being used as a forward. The Jets are the lowest scoring team in the league and they pick up the leagues all time leading scorer and a guy who sits just outside the leagues top 10 scorers this year. There is also the possibility that they have just traded for each others’ problems. The Jets lost the best defensive presence in the league and the Lions lost a lot of top end scoring. Time will tell but good to see teams trying to improve. It would seem this trade was in the works before Friday nights games as the Lions put Burgess and Ingraham together and had Ritcey and Messervey together, was this a showcase for the Jets? Ingraham led the Lions with a goal and 2 assists, Burgess added 2 goals. Ritcey had 1 and 1, d’Entremont had 2 assists and single assists went to Flemming and Messervey. For the Jets lone goals were scored by Itchy, MacIsaac, Ross and Tran, lone apples by Croke, MacEachern, Orser and Turple. Tough game to call here as it may take some time for the new guys to get acclimated to their new teams. Turps has played twice with the Lions already so I give them the edge.

Lions 4 – Jets 3

Oilers (8-6-1) vs Flames (10-5) Flames lead season series 2-1

Bent scored both Oilers goals, now he leads the league in both goals and points. Without the Skinner tandem the Oilers were rudderless and lost to a determined Jets team. The Flames pulled out the win in the battle for first overall, they did it by scoring 3 unassisted goals, one each by Coombs, Baxter and Manson. Huge mistake by Flames management as Baxter asks the Oilers Webber for a drive this Friday so he can indulge in free beer and pizza. Webber will pick him up but Baxter may spend the game locked in a trunk in the parking lot. I will be nice enough to let him out for the after party. The leagues 4 top scorers go head to head in this one so look for lots of offensive chances. This one could come down to who shows ad who doesn’t, Flames pizza party ensures a full bench, will the Oilers be missing any top guys?

Oilers 6 – Flames 2

Ratpack (6-8-1) vs Stars (9-6) Stars lead season series 3-0

Remember 1983 when Munden and Glazebrook were lighting up all those little bastards that couldn’t skate yet? That is what Friday nigh looked like as Desi had 4 goals and an assist and Glazebrook has 2 goals and 3 helpers. Cleveland and McNeil each added an apple but the real story is the re-emergence of Spryfield’s most famous duo. Hard to imaging anyone stopping the Ratpack if these two put up those numbers the rest of the way. The Stars were missing their top guy who is on the IR as he was savagely attacked by a deer, yes, you read that right a deer attacked Havey. The Stars organization has provided team therapists to help him through the ordeal but a timeline to return isn’t set yet.

Rattlin Bog 4 – Stars 3

10 Minute Misconduct Race:

1 – Veinot, Murphy, Messervey, Zwicker

Shootout Scoring Race:

1 – Messervey, Manson, Flinn, Ryan, Gilbert, Corkill, MacQueen, Hill

Rookie Scoring Race:

21 – Manson
18 - Gilbert
14 – Iceton
8 – Newcombe
5 - Daly
2 – O’Hearn

Side Notes:

I like the trade, interesting that the 2017 trade also involved Itchy. Hartlin, Chucky and Itchy went to the Ice and Mitchell, Saunders and Blackmore went to the Jets. I had to check with league historian Longo for the details of that trade. It was the only season Blackmore played in the HRHL. I wonder if this trade makes anyone retire.

Quinn Hughes gets traded one day before Turple gets traded, top D are available if you are willing to pay the price.

I read the headline that Skinner was traded from the Oilers and thought Vienot finally cut the cord, turns out wrong Skinner, wrong Oilers.

Wayne Gretzky got traded so now does HRHL all time scoring leader Wayne Ritcey, no one is untouchable.
Turple has a broken foot and Ritz has a broken elbow, were these teams juts trading away injuries?

Christmas parties can mess up lineups. This was one of the worst weeks for making Prediction Pool picks. Perry is the lone 3 for 3 guy. Well Ted went 3 for 3 too but he forgot to send his picks along.

Only 30 guys who played in 2017 and saw the last big trade are still in the league.

I am having a hard go of it in FFB, I need a Boswell to get 11 points to move on to the second round of the playoffs in one pool and I need Warren to get 30 for that to happen in my other pool. Boswell might pull it off, Warren has a minute chance. Go Steelers!!

All of a sudden McDavid is only 3 points behind MacKinnon.

Does Bedard’s injury end his Olympic dreams.

3 Nova Scotian’s in the top 22 NHL scorers. Where is the next generation of Nova Scotian superstars? We are spoiled but these guys.

This week’s games are the last before Christmas, I hope everyone gets what they want under the tree.

I know some guys are complaining about playing on boxing day but it was that or go to a 24 game schedule.

Flames and Stars was getting heated, playoff intensity. Good to see, playoffs should be fantastic.

I can see who votes multiple times in the polls, please just vote once.

Weekly 3 stars…….

3. Grease , 37 saves in the jets 3-2 win over the oilers last week . This was a game the jets had no bizness winning but grease was brilliant with several game changing saves. He was confident in himself as he picked the jets to win.

2. Grease , 51 saves in the flames 3-0 win over the stars last week. This was a game the flames had no bizness winning but grease was brilliant with several game changing saves . He was confident in himself as he picked the flames to win.

1. Hull and Oates are back for one night only
Munden Glazebrook dominate the lions with 2 goals 3 assists and 4 goals 1 assists. Both players scored several beautiful goals and I can speak from past experience it’s a blast being the third man in their wing. This duo played how Eddie envisioned they would and this will silence the trade rumours surrounding them by trap management (Eddie)
They were both dogs on a bone Friday night

• Lions vs Jets:
Both teams are near the bottom of the standings. The Lions just added Ritcey and Messervey, who are proven scorers. If they gel quickly, Lions have the edge.
Prediction: Lions win a close one.
• Oilers vs Flames:
This is the marquee matchup. Flames lead the league in points, but Oilers boast the league’s top scorer, Mike Bent (20G, 20A, 40PTS). Flames’ balanced attack (Nick Baxter, Gerard Bray) vs Oilers’ firepower.
Prediction: Flames narrowly win, but expect a high-scoring game.
• Ratpack vs Stars:
Stars are second in the standings and recently beat Jets convincingly. Ratpack has struggled offensively (41 GF in 15 games).
Prediction: Stars win comfortably.

Summary

• Lions over Jets (close game, boosted by trade).

• Stars over Ratpack (clear favorite).

Week 16.

The Lunn’s Mill Beer Co. Stewtenni-Ale POWER RANKINGS headed into this week.:

1. Flames: In 1st place. 3-0-0 in their last three games. 12 goals for and only 1 against (with two shutouts) during this winning streak.

2. Oilers: 3rd in league standings but climbing. 2-1-0 in their last three games but coming off a loss. 1 shutout during this stretch, and 14 goals for versus 6 against.

3. Stars: 2nd in the league at present, but only 1-2-0 in their last three games, with 8 goals for and 11 against.

4. Jets: Making a playoff charge and coming off a big win and fired up by a blockbuster trade. 6th in league standings, but 1-2-0 in their last three games with 6 goals for and 10 against.

5a. RatPack: Coming off a big win in which offensive talisman Munden was a beast. 1-2-0 in their three most recent games with 8 goals for and 15 against.

5b. Lions: The other trade partner in the league’s recent blockbuster. 1-2-0 in their last three skates, and coming off a loss to the RatPack who are chasing them for 4th place. 11 goals for and 16 against in this latest three-game stretch.

Early Game: Our trade partners face off less than a week after pulling off a massive 4-player mega-deal. Maybe the Jets squeak this one out? 3-2 Jets win.

Sandwich Skate: Oil meets Flame in an incendiary battle of hot clubs. The VeinBros get burned and the Flames stay hot. Flames win 3-2.

West-Coaster: The Yella Fellas try to put a ro-dent in the Stars title hopes in the late game and eek out a win in this trap game. RatPack win 3-2.

So exciting to see a trade in this league that wasn't motivated by someone being an insufferable dick. All previous trades were to move an annoyance. It has always been hard to trade a fella cause no one wants to upset another fella. This time all involved don't seem to be annoyed. Maybe this is the new HRHL reality. More trades GM's!

The new guys on each team will want to prove their old squads made a mistake. Ritz daughter showed up at school today excited that her brother beat down a fella at his game last night. Maybe Ritz is inspired and throws down tonight!
Jets win.

Flames have owned the Oilers so far this year but tonight the Oil come out firing and it's over early.
Oil win.

Rats are hard to predict from game to game. If Batman and Robin can repeat last week the Stars can't keep up on the scoresheet I don't think. Desi is Robin by the way....
Rats win.

Notes……

I wrote a big ol post twice earlier , lost it twice

Lions/ jets…… the trade happens and they play each other first night. The jets and their new high powered offence score two in each period and defeat the lions 4-2. Ritz scores two in his debut and Ross and hype train score the others .

Oilers/Flames……..two of the top three in the league collide here and it could be a good one . Red hot grease leads the flames to a 5-3 win over the oilers. The line and Manson score all 5

Rattraps/stars…….. after losing two straight the stars come out with a big effort tonight and defeat the traps 4-2. Poirier, iceton , MacDonald and Gilbert all score a single in the win
