| Congrats to Timmy Ryan on his second Prediction Pool championship. Tim takes home the $540 winners prize. First time in 3 years we have had an outright winner. Thanks for playing and an extra special thanks to those who do a bit of a write up along with their picks. Now onto the playoff predictions and the season wrap-up.
Flames (15-7-2) vs Lions (12-11-1) Lions win season series 3-2, Flames outscored Lions 18-16
What stands out in this season series is the guys who didn’t play head to head. Grease missed 3 games, Manson missed 3 games, Burgess missed 2, Donkey missed 4, Ingraham missed 2, Fougere and Billard each missed 1. Hard to get a feel for how they stack up with all those games missed then add in that Turple was traded after these teams played each other 3 times. Newcombe scored in every game these teams played, 1 per game. Bray was the top scorer in the series with 5 goals and 6 assists followed closely by Baxter with 3 and 6. Billard and Burgess each scored 5 goals for the Lions, not a lot to talk about after that. The Lions have a must win game under their belt, will that help them? Will Manson’s High School team play on Friday night? Will Burgess play for the Lions or will he be in Pictou watching his kid play? This series is tougher to call that a 1 vs 4 should be. The Lions are not the team that they drafted but they have only gone 5-4 since the trade. The Flames were the top team most of the year but they finished 1-3 and struggled with the pressure of trying to clinch top spot. I am going to assume everyone plays and I am going with the Vegas favorite.
Flames over Lions in 3.
Oilers (14-9-1) vs Stars (14-10) Oilers win season series 4-1, outscoring the Stars 26 -17
So what do you get from those stats, not much D was played in this series, or the goalies were brutal. Just 1 point separated these two franchises this season, 1 OT loss against a regulation loss so they are closely matched. 5 of the league’s top 7 scorers are from these 2 teams as well. Stars owner JB scored 5 goals this season, 3 against the Oilers so he is liking the match up. Haverstock’s 4 goals lead the Stars and Gallant led the team with 6 points. Bent and Veinot each had 8 goals in the series, Veinot’s 13 points bested Bent by 3. LeBlanc scored 6 but failed to get any helpers. The one Stars win is a game in which the Oilers were missing Veinot but the Stars were missing both Haverstock and Gilbert. Not sure what to make of that. This one could go either way as well but I have to pick my tea to sweep.
Oilers over Stars in 2.
Season Wrap
The career stats have been updated and just 5 guys have reached a major career milestone. Fougere passed the 300 point mark and will get a gold stick this season. Tracey and Bray both will receive silver sticks for reaching the 200 point plateau and Bronze sticks for 100 points were claimed by Pecarski and Turple. Congrats to all the winners on their amazing achievements.
The Flames win the President’s trophy but it came down to the final game of the season. Nice work by the rookie GM tandem of Baxter and Manson.
Bent scores 6 points in the season’s final game to take the Art Ross with 55 points, Baxter comes in second with 54. This is Bent’s first Art Ross trophy.
Haverstock and Marc LeBlanc share the Rocket Richard, leading the league with 32 goals each. Marc tied Havey with 40 seconds left in the final game.
The Gretzky award for most assists goes to Baxter with 36, 14 more than last season when Eddie and Josh held him back.
Jason Murphy wins the Dave Semenko award with 20 penalty minutes to lead the league, this is an award Murphy was regularly in the running for in his hey day, nice to see him back in the mix.
Graeme Ross takes the Lady Bing with zero penalty minutes and every game played, he was too busy taking his frustrations out on Croke to be bothered taking penalties against the opponent.
The Flames take home the William Jennings trophy, allowing the fewest goals with just 65 against over the season. Grease led the way playing 19 of those games and posting a 2.79 GAA, Logan did have a shut out for the Flames and Findlay played 4 games and registered a sparkling 2.25gaa for them, both these guys will get their names etched on the trophy.
Grease’s 2.79 GAA led all goalies who played the minimum 15 games required to be eligible for the Vezina. Robinson at 3.14 was a distant second.
The Oilers scores the most goals this season with 105, the Stars were next at 99. The Oilers plus 28 edged out the Flames at plus 27.
The Jets would like to thank the 2024 Pack for being so futile, the Jets 53 goals for and minus 41 would both be records if not for that Pack team.
Grease wins the goalie scoring title, with just 2 points Glenn and Dan finished just off the lead with 1 each.
Gilbert wins both the rookie and defenceman scoring title edging Manson 32-27. These guys could put up historic career numbers if they have staying power in the HRHL.
Ryan won the shoot out scoring race with 2.
Almost Lastly, I would like to thank Jim Croke and Peter Duke as they pass the torch for the Jets franchise to a new leadership group. Running a team is great for the week of the draft and when you win the playoffs are a blast, other than that it is a lot of lugging beer and getting messages from people about who they have on their lines and why they should be on the first line. Peter and Jim are not going away, they will be draft eligible next season. Peter had hip replacement surgery and rumour has it the doctor told him he put in a goal scorers hip. Thanks guys. The Jets franchise has been spoken for as we have 2 competing groups looking to purchase the Jets. We await the most lucrative offer.
Good luck in the playoffs to all teams involved.
Looks like Friday April 10th 7pm for our banquet at Maxwell’s Plum. If anything changes your captains will let you know. We will supply some finger foods and a bunch of draught. Hope to see you all there.
