Stallions tie Titans and knock em out of 1st place
In this first official matchup of 2 teams that usta be 1 team, the Titans, short some key players, and the Stallions battled to a 5-5 tie that went the full nine. The Stallions got first blood in the top of the 1st and the Titans answered them in the bottom half of the inning, tacking on 3 more runs in the next two innings. Andrade, Kenning and pitcher Mario Pena, who pitched a near-complete gem, loaded the bases in the bottom 2, with 2 runs crossing the plate on Don Kazarinoff's hard hit grounder. In the 3rd, Danny Gutierrez scored on a sac fly to make it 4-1. The Stallions finally broke through with 2 outs in the 7th when 5 successive hits scored 2 and stranded 3, to make it 4-3. The Titans added a 5th run in the 8th when Pena slashed a vicious double, and Joey Martino, who never met a pitch he didn't like, knocked him in with an opposite field dunker. Trailing 5-3 in the 9th with one out, Stallions Mike Morgan singled, stole second, had to hold on Brian Greene's flyout to center, then stole third. Gage Maverik walked and stole second, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with two outs. Then Carlos Ponce unloosed a booming gapper in right just beyond Jess Hanner's reach, to score both runners and bring Ponce's RBI total for the day to 3, to tie the game. As predicted, Morgan scored, popped the helmet, changed his jersey and blew out of there to maintain his work commitment to a local hockey team. Stallions Brian Greene limited the Titans to 5 hits and 1 run in the last 6 innings and wins a hard-earned "Tie", shutting the door in the bottom half of the 9th to end the game. Kudos and thanks to Jess and Cris for the fabulous sandwich/lemonade stand - they are quite a class act. Once a Stallion, always a Stallion. Apologies to Jack P who had the great misfortune to be on a cellphone call with Stallions manager Hellman just as Carlos Ponce laced his two-RBI hit in the 9th.
