Squid Fill All 8 Stockings
Another close back-n-forther eventually goes the Squid way. Eddie Alfano for the win in relief of a Jay Lafontaine quality start, in front of a Squid defense that allowed unearned runs across.
All was quiet until the 4th, when the Red Sox stacked three singles for a Martinez RBI, then another run on a textbook Fallat single the other way. Squid respond with Murray driving in Stoeber's leadoff double, 2-1 Sox.
First two batters are OB to open the Squid 5th, Sterz, Hale, and Rothert with RBIs and the Squid are up 4-2.
Red Sox come right back with 3 runs in the 6th with hits in the heart of the order from Healy, Finnerty, and a double off the left field fence by Rombro. Would have been tied here had the Squid not errored, allowing Haley to score Rombro to give the Sox the lead 5-4.
Sox lead off the 7th with a Wolferman hit, Squid record two outs, then - again - botch an inning-ender. Advantage Rombro, who adds another RBI to pad the Sox lead to 6-4. Squid 7th, Sterz with a 1-out BB, Hale singles, Rothert doubles to drive in two, Stoeber doubles Rothert home, Squid take the lead 7-6.
The Squid add insurance with two outs in the 8th with a Lafontaine single and a SB, then an O'Neal single.
Lots of quality work in the OFs by both squads.
