Expos edge Blue Wahoos in wild game
After a scoreless first inning, the Blue Wahoos got on the board first. Three of the first 4 batters singled, with Bruce Aylward knocking in the run, to give the Wahoos a 1-0 lead. The Expos struck right back in the top of the 3rd scoring a pair of runs on 4 walks and an RBI single by Adam Martin, before the Blue Wahoos turned a 4-3 double play with the bases loaded to get out of the inning. Double plays would become a theme. The Expos turned double plays in the 3rd, 4th and 5th, with the latter one coming with no outs and the bases loaded to keep the Blue Wahoos off the board. In the top of the 5th, the Expos added another run on a wild play that could have been the 5th double play of the game. The bases were loaded with 1 out when a humpback liner to 2nd was dropped, causing chaos on the bases. The runner going to 2nd was forced out and the runner going to 3rd was caught in a rundown, but was able to make it to 3rd because of an errant throw to allow the run to count. The score was now 3-1. In the 6th, the Expos went down 1-2-3 and the Blue Wahoos first two batters were put out on 2 pitches, leaving the Expos 4 outs from a win. But the Blue Wahoos had other ideas. A hit batter started a rally where 7 straight Wahoos reached base. A bases-clearing double to left by Roger Andras and a 2-run double to right by Tracy Fuller accounted for 5 runs, now leaving the Blue Wahoos 3 outs from a win with a 6-3 lead. In the top of the 7th, the first 2 Expos reached base when a 5-3 double play put the Blue Wahoos 1 out from a win. It was the Expos turn to rally, also having 7 straight batters reach base. It started with an RBI double by Adam Martin. TJ Richartz hit a 2-run single with the bases loaded to tie the game at 6, with runners moving to 2nd and 3rd on the throw home. Then Zach Nahass followed with another 2-run single to give the Expos the lead. When the inning ended, the Expos now lead 9-6. The game was far from over with Adam Martin--the new incarnation of The Wild Thing--entering to try to save the game in the 7th. The Blue Wahoos promptly loaded the bases with no outs on 2 walks and a hit batter. Martin regrouped to strike out the next batter, then walked in a run, before striking out another. With the bases still loaded, Martin was able to induce a check-swing grounder to 2nd--the first ball put in play in the 7th--to seal the win, Rolaids-style!
For the Expos, Nahass, Adam Rausch, Martin, Chris Fantaski and Richartz all had 2 hits. Rausch reached base in all 5 plate appearances, adding 3 walks. For the Blue Wahoos, Mike Bond, Andras and Fuller had 2 hits.
Last batter ... Expos: Ron Lehman, Blue Wahoos: Mike Bond
