Orioles up big early, hold off Red Sox comeback to secure W
The Orioles offense was clicking early in this one, building an 8-1 lead after 3 innings, with 8 different Orioles knocking in a run. The Red Sox scored single runs in the 1st and 4th inning using extra base hits (Mike Lynch triple in the 1st, Adam Lynch and Brian Stambaugh doubles in the 4th), but their offense didn't get on track until the bottom of the 6th. Seven different Red Sox singled in the inning, leading to 5 runs, with the last 3 singles coming with 2 outs, to cut the lead to 8-7. But the Orioles got a ground out to end the inning to cling to a 1-run lead. The Orioles added an insurance run in the 7th when Dan Webster tripled and scored on Andrew Stambaugh's double. In the bottom of the 7th, the Sox put the tying runs on base with 1 out, but the Orioles got a pair of grounders to close out the win.
For the Orioles, both Webster (a home run short of the cycle) and Bryan Hemcher had 3 hits to lead the team. Bob Eichelberger, Andrew & Randy Stambaugh, Curt Zimmerman and Greg Minnich each had 2 hits. For the Red Sox, Jayson Wachter led the way with 3 hits, while Mike & Adam Lynch, Tyler Robinson, Brian Stambaugh, and Jim Weit added 2 hits each.
