Cardinals romp with pair of late 6-run innings
While Corey Miller was hurling 4 scoreless 3-hit innings, the Cardinals built a 4-0 lead after 4 innings, with Jeff Kiesel's 2-out, 2-run double in the 3rd breaking the scoreless tie. After a scoreless 5th, the Cardinals lit up the scoreboard in the 6th. After the first 3 batters loaded the bases, Jeff Hostetter delivered a 2-run double, followed promptly by a Todd Racey 2-run triple. After Racey scored, Brett Herman wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single. The Rays would get on the board in the bottom of the inning, scoring 3, with Jeff Fishel's 2-run single knocking in the last 2. The Cardinals would put the game away in the 7th, scoring 6 more runs on 7 hits, including 4 doubles. The Rays, down 13, led off the bottom of the 7th with 6 straight singles, cutting the lead to 16-6 and giving them a glimmer of hope; but a 5-2 double play would snuff out any chance of a rally.
Kiesel, Hostetter and Herman led the Cardinals with 3 hits a piece, with each also knocking in 3 runs. Todd Racey and Andy Wertz adding 2 hits in the win. The Rays had 5 different players with 2 hits--Keith Garrigan, Tim Albers, Derek Sunbury, Dave Snell, and Shane Jacoby--in their 15 hit attack.
