Down 5, A's comeback, then seal game with 8 unearned in 7th
The game begin as a pitcher's duel for 3 innings, with the only run being unearned and scoring on a 2-out RBI single by the Red Sox' Neil Werner. With 2 outs and nobody on in the 4th, the Red Sox offense awoke and 7 consecutive batters reached base, resulting in 4 runs and a 5-0 lead. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run double by Mike Lynch, who also held the A's scoreless through the first 3 innings. In the next half inning, the A's offense finally came to life. Dan McWilliams hit a 2-run double with no outs and the bases loaded to get the A's on the board. With 2 outs, the A's reloaded the bases, and Mark Mueller tied the game at 5 with a huge 2-run double. Ken Brignall took the mound for the A's in the 5th and retired the side in order, then drew a 2-out walk in the 6th that was followed by an Omar Bautista double to give the A's their first lead at 6-5. Brignall again held the Red Sox scoreless in the 6th despite the Sox loading the bases with a single, walk and hit batter. The floodgates opened in the 7th for the A's when 2 of the first 4 batters reached on errors. Isidore Martinez blew the game open with a 3-run triple and the A's added 5 more runs in the 7th. Brignall finished his 3 scoreless innings to pick up the win, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 3.
Bautista and Mueller each had 3 hits, 3 RBIs and a run for the A's. Ken Brittain also had 3 hits, scoring twice. Martinez was 2-for-2 with a single and walk to go with his bases-clearing triple. For the Red Sox, Oscar Blanco had 3 hits and David Trageser added 2 hits.
