Royals blow 7-run lead; show grit with 2 in 6th in 9-9 game
The Royals opened the scoring in the 1st, scoring 2 runs without a hit, thanks to a walk and 2 errors. They added to their lead in the more traditional way in the second, scoring 5 runs on 5 separate RBI hits, with Alex Nova having an RBI double. Down 7-0, the Colt 45s started their comeback in the 3rd, scoring an unearned run with an error and bases-loaded walk with 2 outs. Just like the Royals, the Colts 45s added 5 more runs with their bats in the top of the 4th on 5 hits and a hit batter. Greg Pomraning and Brandon Beck had back-to-back 2-run doubles in the inning. With the lead down to 1 run at 7-6, the Royals extended their lead in the bottom of the 4th with a 2-run double by BJ Eves. The score would stay that way until the top of the 6th when the Colt 45s turned 2 walks into 3 runs to tie the game at 9, punctuated by Greg Pomraning's 2-out, 2-run double. Just like the 4th inning, the Royals immediately answered back. Alex Nova led off with his 2nd double of the game and scored on a Tony Kelly sac fly to put the Royals ahead. Nick Collette added an insurance run with a 2-out RBI single. In the top of the 7th, the Colt 45s got 2 of their first 3 batters on base to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but Chris Caldwell buckled down and induced a fly ball to right and then struck out the final batter to get the win.
For the Royals, Collette had 3 hits and 2 RBIs, while Matt Hayes, Eves, and Nova added 2 hits in the win. Andy Mumma pitched 3 innings with 5 Ks, only allowing 3 hits and an unearned run. For the Colt 45s, Jay Metzbower was perfect, going 3-for-3, Pomraning had 2 doubles and 4 RBIs, and Josh Knaub also had 2 hits.
