Cards jump out 10-0 then barely hold off Wahoos rally
The Cardinals came out of the gate hot and had 2 runs after 4 batters, but Ben Knouse was able to come in and get 9 straight outs to keep the Cardinals at 2 runs after 3 innings. On the other side, Steve Mercado pitched 3 scoreless innings to begin the game. In the top of the fourth, the Cardinals batted around, scoring 8 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks, a hit batter and a key error, to open a 10-run lead, with Ben Sheppard singling twice in the inning. The Blue Wahoos started their comeback in the bottom of the 4th. A 2-out, 2-run single by Jared Bourgeois got them on the board. In the 5th, a 2-out, 2-run double by Phil Polakoff followed by an RBI single by Mike Bond cut the lead to 10-5. The first 3 Wahoos reached base and scored in the 6th to cut the lead to 2, but Mike Grady got a fly out to left with the bases loaded to preserve the Cardinals lead. In the bottom of the 7th, the Blue Wahoos once again loaded the bases with only 1 out and were threatening to walk off the game with the winning run at 1st. However, Grady induced a comebacker for a 1-2-3 double play to seal the win for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals bunched 11 of their 15 baserunners into their game-winning 8-run 4th inning. Polakoff retired 9 of 10 Cardinals he faced, including the final 8, to give the Wahoos a chance at the comeback win. Sheppard had 3 hits, 2 runs and an RBI to pace the Cardinals offense. For the Blue Wahoos, Bond, Bourgeois, and Roger Andras each were 3 for 4 while Mike King, Chris Shape and Bill Rexroth added 2 hits each to their 19-hit attack.
