Rays never trail in win over Dodgers
Both teams got off to quick starts in this one when each team's first 3 batters reached base and the first 2 came around to score for a 2-2 tie after 1 inning. In the 3rd, Steve Crone started a Rays' rally, leading off the inning with a double and scoring 1 of the 3 runs that inning to give the Rays a 5-2 lead. The Dodgers pulled within 2 in the 4th on a Jay Persing RBI single, but the Rays got that run right back in the next half inning. In the 7th, Shane Jacoby's bases-clearing double provided insurance runs for the Rays, but that insurance was not needed as Tim Gerber finished up his 3 shutout innings to pick up the save, only allowing 2 hits and striking out 3.
Derek Sunbury filled the scorebook, going 4 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs for the Rays. Jacoby added an RBI ground out to his 3-run double to lead all batters with 4 RBIs. Dave Snell had 3 hits and three other Rays each had 2 hits--Earl Kirk, Jerry Leisher and Dale Peck. For the Dodgers, Persing and Jim Howard led the team with 2 hits each. From the oddity desk, Tim Albers had a single, walk, hit by pitch and sacrifice fly, going 1 for 1 with 3 runs scored. If only he would've reached on catcher's interference to complete the crazy cycle!
