Christmas in June! Dodgers gifted win by Cardinals
This game was a pitchers' duel through 4 innings. The Cardinals' Corey Miller pitched 4 shutout innings, allowing only 2 hits, and not allowing a runner past first base. For the Dodgers, David Haynes was almost as good, allowing only 3 hits and a walk; but the walk to Ben Sheppard came around to score as Miller helped his own cause with a sac fly after a Craig Martin double moved Sheppard to 3rd. The Dodgers tied the game in the 5th on an RBI single by Brian Crimmel. The Cardinals took the lead right back in the 5th. After a leadoff pop up, they strung together 7 straight hits, scoring 4 runs, with the biggest hit being Jeff Hostetter's 2-run double. The Cardinals still had the based loaded with 1 out, threatening to blow the game open. However, the Dodgers would turn a 1-2-3 double play to get out of the jam, and it would turn out to be very important. Neither team scored in the 6th, leaving the Dodgers down 5-1 entering the 7th. The Dodgers started the 7th with a double and single and then an error allowed the first run to score. The next two batters were retired, leaving the Dodgers down to their last out ... and making any further runs scored unearned. Jeff Schwenk, Haynes, and Crimmel followed with 3 straight singles to cut the lead to 5-4 and load the bases. The Cardinals made a pitching change to try to preserve the win, but Ben Sheppard couldn't find his control and walked in 3 straight runs--the first walks allowed by the Cards--to give the Dodgers a 7-5 lead, before getting a fly out to left to finally end the inning. But, the Cardinals still had a chance to answer back. They put runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out, when a Dale Chronister grounder was thrown wide of 2nd cut the lead to 7-6, leaving runners on 1st and 2nd. Jon Kilmer then got a sharp grounder to third for a 5-4 double play to end the game and strand the tying run on base. He also picked up the win in this Dodgers' improbable victory.
On offense, the Dodgers were led by Jeff Schwenk (2 hits, 2 runs) and Brian Crimmel (2 hits, run, 2 RBIs). The Cardinals had 3 players with 3 hits--Craig Martin, Andy Wertz, and Steve Mercado.
Last batter ... Dodgers: Jon Kilmer, Cardinals: Brett Herman
