Vikings feast on Wahoos relievers for comeback win
The Blue Wahoos started quickly as the first two batters reached when being hit by a pitch, moved to 2nd and 3rd on a grounder, and scored on a Randy Pepo double. Pepo then scored on a Sean Englert single to take a 3-0 lead after the top of the 1st. The Vikings would answer right back, starting with 2 singles and scoring a run on Jose Vega's double. After a popup and a strikeout, Josh Fishel hit a 2-run single to left to tie the game at 3 after 1 inning. Neither team scored in the 2nd, but the Blue Wahoos turned up the heat in the 3rd. The first 6 Wahoos reached base to plate 5 runs, culminated by the rare 3-run single to right field by Tracy Fuller. The Vikings changed pitchers to try to slow the onslaught, but another single put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. That's when a fly ball to center field turned into a double play as Adrian Ferrer gunned down the runner from 2nd trying to tag to get to 3rd. A strikeout followed to end the inning with the Blue Wahoos up 8-3. The Vikings would add a run in the 4th when Tim Steinhauer doubled with 2 outs and scored on Ferrer's single. In the bottom of the 5th, the Vikings were still down 8-4 but they had now gotten into the Blue Wahoos bullpen. The first 5 Vikings reached base, plating 2 runs, before another pitching change was made. A sac fly by Fishel got the Vikings within 1 run, then Steinhauer laced a 2-run single to right to give the Vikings their first lead at 9-8. In the 6th inning, the Vikings loaded the bases with 2 outs and Fishel and Steinhauer would come through again. Fishel hit a bases-clearing double to right to bring his RBI total to 6 for the game and Steinhauer would single him home after a walk to extend the lead to 14-8. In the meantime, the Vikings had brought in Jose Vega to pitch after a leadoff walk in the 4th to try to slow down the Wahoos' offense. He struck out 7 over 4 innings, only allowing an unearned run in the 7th, to pick up the win with the Vikings comeback.
Tim Steinhauer led all hitters with 3 hits and added 4 RBIs. Jeff Tomison, Vega, Fishel, Ferrer, and Scott Friend added 2 hits in the Vikings' victory. For the Blue Wahoos, Pepo and Chris Shape led the team with 2 hits.
