Cardinals go extras to beat shorthanded Cubs

The first two innings were scoreless, but there was a little action. Andy Rager tried to score from 1st on a single and was thrown out at home to end the 2nd inning because the next batter was an automatic out since the Cubs only had 8 players. The Cardinals got on the board in the 3rd on a Dave Miller 2-out RBI single. Trying to answer back, the Cubs loaded the bases in the 3rd but a grounder back to the mound ended the threat. In the 4th, the Cardinals finally got the bats going, starting the inning with 3 straight hits and scoring their 4th run of the inning on a Brett Herman triple. Steve Mercado got out of the 4th unscathed, turning a double play on a liner back to him, to complete 4 scoreless innings. Dave Warfel came in to pitch for the Cubs in the top of the 5th and immediately gave up a home run to Damien Robinson--the first batter he faced--but would shut down the Cardinals for the next 4 innings to give the Cubs a chance to come back. They did just that in the 6th inning, taking advantage of some wildness from the Cardinals pitchers, scoring 6 runs on 3 hits and 6 walks to tie the game. But they didn't have the opportunity to go ahead as the automatic out ended the inning with the bases loaded. Neither team could score in the 7th to send the game to extra innings. Both pitchers got through the 8th without allowing a run, but now the Cubs ran out of pitching. The Cardinals first 2 batters in the 9th were hit by pitches to load the bases, then Andy Wertz smacked a double to put the Cardinals ahead 8-6. Mercado knocked in Wertz with a single to make the score 9-6 and end the inning (since the maximum number of runs were scored). All the Cubs could hope for was to tie the game, but Brett Herman set down the side in order to complete his 3 1/3 scoreless innings and pick up the win in this exciting game.

For the victors, Corey Miller, Carey Wertz and Steve Mercado had a pair of hits. Five of the eight Cubs also had a pair of hits--Danny Rosado, Shane Beck, Don Dellinger, Andy Rager and Anthony Kim. The latter 2 reached base 4 times with 2 hits and 2 walks.
