Royals roll to victory behind Mumma and their offense
The Royals scored 2 runs in the first inning without a hit with the help of the Cubs, thanks to 3 walks and a 2-out error. They added 4 more in the 2nd with consecutive RBI singles by Ricky Habel, Neal Landis, and Matt Hayes, but the Cubs threw 2 runners out on the bases to keep the inning from being worse. Then in the 4th, after the first two Royals were put out, the next 5 reached base, extending the lead to 9-0, with the big hit being Habel's 2-run single. Meanwhile, on the mound, Andy Mumma pitched 4 shutout innings, only allowing 2 hits while striking out 5. The Cubs ended the shutout in the 6th with an RBI double by Doug Jones and an RBI single by Anthony Kim. The Royals got those runs back in the bottom of the inning, scoring 3 runs with triples by Jesse Kling and Neal Landis.
