Expos storm back with 6 2-out runs in 6th to edge Cardinals
The Expos started the game by loading the bases with no outs, but the Cardinals turned a 1-2-3 double play and got a fly out to exit the inning unscathed. Their defense would be exceptional the entire game--Mike Grady turned several low or wide throws at first into outs and Brett Herman made a diving catch in right center. The Cardinals got on the board first in the 2nd inning. Corey Miller doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score on Carey Wertz's single. A Steve Mercado sac fly made the score 2-0. Todd Racey would score their 3rd run in the 4th, leading off the inning with a single and scoring on a double play. Meanwhile, Corey Miller pitched 4 shutout innings with 6 hits allowed. The Cardinals extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth on a Ben Sheppard RBI groundout and an error. In the top of the 6th, the first 2 Expos grounded out, making 10 straight batters retired by the Cardinals, but the Expos bats would finally awaken. The next 7 Expos alternated singles and doubles, with Jim Lyter ending the shutout with a 2-run single and Chris Fantaski putting the Expos ahead 6-5 with a 2-run single. In the bottom of the 7th, the first 2 Cardinals reached on an error and a single, but Keith Acosta induced 3 straight fly outs to end the game and pick up the win.
The Expos had 4 batters with 2 hits--Lyter, Fantaski, Adam Martin and Adam Rausch. The Cardinals' Carey Wertz led all batters with 3 hits, while Herman and Racey had 2 hits each in the loss.
