Rays win Olympic race walking competition at Cly
In a game with more walks than hits, it appropriately began with a leadoff walk--the first of 4 walks Mike Koller would draw on the afternoon. Koller would come around to score on a Brad Markle double, and a Steve Crone 2-run single made the score 3-0 Rays after the first. The Vikings would tie the game in the bottom of the 2nd on an RBI double by Adrian Ferrer and a 2-run single by Gary Blaylock. With the heat, both teams brought in new pitchers for the 3rd inning and that's when everyone broke out their walking shoes. The Rays would plate 10 runs in the top of the 3rd on 6 walks, a hit batter, an error and 4 singles. The Vikings would get half of those runs back in the bottom of the inning on 6 walks and a single. The totals for the 3rd inning: 15 runs on 5 hits! However, 4 more runs by the Rays in the top of the 4th on 3 bases loaded walks and a sac fly extended the lead back to 9 runs for the 17-8 final. With all the walks and high pitch counts, the time limit had been reached after only 4 innings. Every half inning in this game had at least one free pass issued by the pitchers.
Markle led all batters with 3 hits and also scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. Koller (4 walks, 3 runs), Crone (2 hits, 4 RBIs, 1 run, 2 walks) and Jerry Leisher (2 hits, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, 2 walks) were all perfect for the Rays. Tim Gerber also had a pair of hits in the win. For the Vikings, Josh Hill and Mike Freed each had 2 hits.
