Blue Wahoos hold off Orioles comeback for 7-6 win
After a scoreless 1st, the Blue Wahoos started building their lead in the 2nd. A Randy Pepo 2-out single opened the scoring, but the Orioles kept it at 1-0 by throwing a second runner trying to score out at home. The Wahoos added 2 more in the 3rd with 5 straight 2-out singles, extending the lead to 3-0 on RBI hits by Shawn Kilburn and Phil Polakoff. Once again with 2 outs in the 4th, Pepo hit a 2-run single to make it 5-0. On the mound, Ben Knouse cruised through 3 no-hit innings to start the game, but a leadoff error would get the Orioles back in the game in the bottom of the 4th. A hit and a few walks would lead to 3 runs to pull the O's within 2. The Orioles loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 5th, but couldn't cash in; but in the 6th, the first 2 batters reached and Curt Zimmerman followed with an RBI single. After a popout, Garrett Moats hit a hard ground ball to center field just by the diving shortstop that would tie the game at 5, but the runner from first was thrown out at 2nd to keep the rally from getting out of hand. After being held in check for 2 innings, the Blue Wahoos loaded the bases with 2 outs in the top of the 7th. Back-to-back walks to Mike King and Bruce Aylward gave them a 7-5 lead and now they just needed 3 outs to claim the win. The Orioles first 2 batters reached base in the 7th, but Polakoff induced 2 straight fly outs to close in on the win. Travis Eberly hit an RBI single to left to pull the Orioles within one with the tying run on 2nd base, but a grounder to short left the O's just 1 run short.
Five different Blue Wahoos had a pair of hits in the victory--Chris Shape, Polakoff, Roger Andras, Pepo and Aylward. For the Orioles, Bob Eichelberger and Ed Bills had 2 hits.
