Dodgers win nail-biter over Blue Wahoos

The Dodgers scored quickly when Gary Perkins, the 3rd batter of the game, hit a 2-run single to right. They added another run in the 2nd on a David Haynes' RBI single. The Blue Wahoos got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd on Jared Bourgeois' hustle when he scored from second base on Randy Pepo's line out to center field. In the 3rd, the Dodgers started the inning with 6 straight hits, opening with a Dan Shafer triple and ending with a 2-run single by Lou DeSanto, to take a 7-1 lead. The Blue Wahoos started their comeback in the bottom of the 3rd with RBI singles by Phil Polakoff and Bourgeois cutting the lead to 4. They would erase that lead in the fourth in a similar fashion to the Dodgers 4-run inning when 5 of the first 6 batters reached base and Chris Shape's 2-run double tied the game. The Dodgers brought in Jon Kilmer to try to keep the game tied and he was successful, striking out the next 2 batters. The Dodgers would take the lead back right away. In the top of the 5th, Shafer hit a 1-out double and scored on an errant throw to first on the next batter. The Dodgers loaded the bases with 1-out, threatening to score more, but Ben Knouse struck out the next 2 batters to keep the score at 8-7. Knouse would finish the game for the Wahoos, only allowing 2-out singles in the 6th and 7th to hold the Dodgers to 8 runs. Meanwhile, the Dodgers' Kilmer set down the side in the 5th and only allowed a leadoff walk in the 6th to hold the lead, but then got into trouble in the 7th when a Bruce Aylward single followed by an error put runners on 2nd and 3rd base for the Wahoos with 1-out. The Dodgers turned to Shafer to try to get out of the jam. He walked the first batter to load the bases, but then struck out the next 2 batters to prevent a walkoff and preserve the win for the Dodgers.

In addition to picking up the win, Kilmer led all batters with 3 hits and 2 runs. Perkins, DeSanto, Jon Boyer, Jim Howard and Shafer chipped in 2 hits apiece in the win. For the Blue Wahoos, Bourgeois and Aylward had 2 hits. Across both teams, pitchers struck out 17 batters in the game--9 by the Dodgers' staff and 8 by the Wahoos.
