Expos defeat the Colts on a beautiful April evening
On an incredibly gorgeous evening at Testerman Park, the expansion team Expos caught the attenion of the 8 fans watching from the background. Jimmy Wolfe of the Expos held the Colts to just 3 runs in his 5-inning season debut and Don Eckstein pitched in relief providing a scoreless final two frames. Every Expos player had at least one hit (the 19 team total is a franchise high). Toby Lay and Doug Price led the Expos with 3 hits a piece.
A scary moment occured in the Expos half of the sixth, when Doug Price lined a hard-hit shot up the middle, and Colt's pitcher Alex Patton reached high in the air stinging the palm of his hand before making the put-out at first base. Patton would return to finish the complete game performance and live to pitch another day.
The opening at bat in the bottom of the seventh provided a fun moment when the Colt's Sam Rose swung at a pitch embedding the baseball just 12" in front of the plate. Yes, the ball hit the dirt and just stuck there! Catcher and Expos manager Dave Moravec attempted twice to pull the ball from the dirt then awkwardly chased Rose down the first base line, before eventually recording the 2-3 force out. When asked about the play, Moravec replied, "In my 50+ years of baseball, I've never seen that happen. To be involved in the play will be one of the highlights of my lengthy career." Both teams were able to laugh about the moment, and the umpires, well, they just watched the scene play out.
Next up for the Expos will be a Wednesday challenge with the Ducks at Warren County Sports Park, while the Colts will face off against the Dragons next Thursday back at Testerman Park.
