Surpising Expos Best Veteran Tiger
On a 65-degree Sunday afternoon with the wind blowing in, the expansion Cincinnati Expos belted 13 hits and tallied 13 runs off starting pitcher Kenn Gabbard and Rich Gilman in relief. Timely hitting by the Expos in the middle innings gave them a 10-3 lead after the fourth inning. A lengthy fifth inning produced 8 runs (5 by the Tigers) and led to a time limit of 2 hours 15 minutes. Jim Wolfe allowed 8 hits, 5 walks, and just three strikeouts going the distance in the affair. Team manager Dave Moravec went 3 for 5 on the afternoon but left six runners stranded in his last two at-bats. The Tigers were led by Jim Seiter, and Steve Jackson who each had 2 hits on the day. A crowd of nearly 15 enjoyed the game. Catcher Moravec and Pitcher Wolfe colided in front of the Expos dugout both charging for a foul pop up. Thankfully the collision didn't knock out Wolfe as Moravec dove over the top of Wolfe in an athletic move that would have otherwise sent Wolfe to the emergency room. Expos hitters, Toby Lay, Jimmy Wolfe, Tom Siebert, Garry Gebhart, and Jeff Ebersole each had two hits.
