A Test at Testerman
The test came late as the Gamblers mounted a comeback against the Expos, scoring six runs in the final two frames before the sunset drew darkness on the beautiful, yet soggy Testerman Field in Maineville. As the first throw to second base by catcher and coach Dave Moravec in warmups took place, a splash of water in the grassy area in front of second brought a laugh to both dugouts. The field was otherwise playable after a soaking rain the day before.
Tom Seibert got the win, giving up three runs over five innings, while the Expos plated 10 runs behind the Northern Kentucky native. John Wayne led the Expos with a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate (2 - doubles) and scored four of the five times he was at the plate. Toby Lay came through with three clutch doubles and three RBI's, hitting at the top of the Expos lineup, Don Eckstein had three hits on the night, and pitcher Seibert reached base in each of his four at-bats.
The Gamblers' bats came alive in the fifth inning when back-to-back hits by Fred Hunt and Mark Masavage led to two runs. Masavage would have a bases-loaded double (3 RBIs) in the sixth to put the Expos on edge, before reliever Don Eckstein struck out the final two batters to end the top half of the sixth with a score of 10-7. The Expos manufactured a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, extending the game to twilight without enough sun to allow the 7th inning to be played.
A rematch of the two teams won't come until June 12th (Lakota East), but you can bet both teams will be up for the challenge when the time comes. Neither team will soon forget this game at the well-manicured Testerman Field.
