Dragons stay in top tier with execution against the Expos

The Dragon's starter Pedro Siler didn't have his best stuff today, but when backed by twelve runs in the first two innings, it proved a deadly combination for the Expos at Lakota West on a hot afternoon. Todd Garula took the loss for the Expose. Dragon's relief pitchers, Pete Lommen and Jeff Burris completed the games. Expos reliever Toby Lay was tagged with an inside-the-park grand slam by Jerome Clarke in the top half of the sixth.

The struggling Expos plated 7 runs over the first five innings, but couldn't mount a comeback victory. With a two-week layover before their final game, the Expos (8-7 and 5th place) will need to regroup after a four-game skid against top tier teams, while the Dragons (7-2) continue to make up several rain-out games while July heats up.

Hitting standouts for the Dragons included Kenji Heilman and Mike Weckbach who both contributed three hits, while Jimmie Wolfe and John Wayne were the only players with multiple hits for the Expos. When asked after the game about being walked four times, Jamie Stidham, Expos shortstop and catcher replied, "I guess they were afraid to pitch to me today. I hardly saw a ball I could swing at, so I did what I could to help the team and took my base."

A scary moment occured in the third inning as Dragons leadoff hitter Flash Robinson grounded to third baseman, Jimmie Wolfe in what should have been a routine groundout. However, Wolfe's throw was wide of the bag on the home plate side drawing Expos first baseman, Tom Seibert into the baseline just as Flash arrived. Seibert held onto the ball with Flash unable to avoid the collision. Seibert took the brunt of the crash landing on his ass, and was unsure exactly where he was. After assessment, some ice for his bloody mouth and a couple of innings in the hot third base dugout, Seibert was ready to take the field again.
