Colts & Expos Battle at Lakota West

The Colts battled the Expos to the very end, but couldn't complete the win. The game looked to be a pitchers duel between two crafty lefties Alex Patten (Colts) and Tom Seibert (Expos) with the Expos leading 2-1 going into the fifth. However, a walk followed by five hits by the Colts in the inning plated four runs for the underdog Colts giving them a 5-2 lead.

In the bottom half of the 5th, Alex Patten struck out Jeff Ebersole to lead off the inning, but Seibert stepped up with his bat, lacing a single off his opponent. After a wild pitch allowed Seibert to get to second, Jimmy Wolfe crushed a deep line drive to center, where Dave Meinert made an incredible catch that caught Seibert stuck between 2nd and 3rd, ultimately creating a double play to end the otherwise exciting inning.

Seibert went to work shutting down the Colts in the 6th after Patten led off the inning with a single, but was left stranded after three consecutive outs. In the bottom of the sixth, the Expos' bats came alive. John Wayne walked and stole second, and Doug Price drove him home for the first run of he inning. Following another stolen base by Price, Don Eckstein stepped up with an RBI single. The big hit in the inning came off the bat of catcher Jamie Stidham with a double scoring Eckstein all the way from 1st. Expos coach Dave Moravec landed the final blow of the inning with an RBI single to center, scoring Stidham from second and pushing to a 6-5 lead.

However, in the 7th, the Colts weren't done battling. Two key errors by the Expos and a walk by Jeff Sevier had the bases loaded with two outs. Shortstop John Wayne, ended the game with a quality defensive short to first which prevented the tieing run from scoring.

The Colts' hitting highlights included Robin (Snoop) Knotts with three hits, including two doubles down the left field line to the fence and a run scored, and coach Rich Sherrick on base in all of his four plate appearances and two runs scored. Expos center fielder Toby Lay was two for three on the night, with Moravec adding two hits. Stidham went a perfect 3 for 3 with his RBI double.

A sparse crowd of 7 was on hand to witness the matchup, and all of them are likely talking about the game around the water cooler this morning. Next up for the Expos (7-3) will be the Wright Field Reds on Sunday at Bellbrook High School, while the Colts (0-7) play those same Reds next Thursday at Shuler Park.
