Darkness Falls as Expos Explode in Five
The Expos (8-3) outlasted the winless Gamblers (0-9) in what could have otherwise been a tight game. The Expos jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first three innings only to give up four consecutive runs to the Gambler's lineup who woke up in the bottom of the fourth. Five solid hits, two walks by releiver Expos reliever Tom Seibert, and an untimely Expos error landed the Expos in hot water. With the bases load, an inning ending ground ball ended the inning, thwarting any chance of a Gambler's comeback.
The hit parade came for the Expos in the top of the Fifth in what seemed like a 30 minute ininning. The Expos batted around with 9 of the 10 Expos reaching base in the inning. Expos third baseman, Don Eckstein led off the inning witgh a single and later in the inning had a second hit in the inning, completing a perfect 4-4 evening that included two doubles. Expos centerfielder, Jimmy Wolfe also showed off his power and speed with a double, triple and home run and 6 RBI's, falling short of the cycle by one single. Starting pitcher Todd Garula pitched a nearly perfect first two innings with four strike outs but the second inning was only marred by hitting Gambler Mark Masavage who was left stranded at 1B after Garula struck out the side.
Time of the game was just under two hours, called due to a hazy cloud covered darkness which fell over the Lakota East ballfield during the lengthy 5th inning. The Gamblers face the Tiger (2-7) at Miami Meadow next Wednesday, June 18th, while the Expos face a Dragon's team (3-2) who has been challenged with untimely rainouts this season having only completed 5 games.
