No pitchers, no lead off hitter, no problem! Sox rout!
The Burlington White Sox defeated the Burlington Chihuahuas 19-2 on Wednesday at Millcroft Park. Kudos to outfielder Tanner Hodgson for stepping up and throwing a CG (although only 4 innings) on a night where all of the Sox pitching staff was MIA with the exception of the ODC himself, Doug Chrysler, who is currently on the shelf for throwing baseballs!
Kudos also goes out to Alex "Toons" Pallottini for slotting into the leadoff spot for the Sox and essentially taking the job right out from under Jordan Stamp's nose (who was also MIA on the evening)! Toons went 1-1 on the day with 3 RBIs, 4 Runs and 2 stolen bases. Stamp will be appropriately moved into the "below Cossitt SR" hole promptly upon his return!
Of course on a 19 run day, breaking down the inning-by-inning scoring would be insane and not worth the time! Here are the Coles notes:
The Sox went down 1-0 in the top of the 1st and answered in the bottom half with 2 to take the lead. The Chihuahuas tied things up promptly in the top of the 2nd and then shit got crazy! Through a large volume of walks and timely hitting the Sox plated 7 in the 2nd and 10 in the 3rd. Time became a factor and the game ended after the top of the 4th.
The Sox piled up 11 hits in the game and a staggering 13 walks (as well as 3 HBPs). Needless to say the match quickly turned into a track meet as Graham, Cossitt JR, and Toons each drove in three runs for Burlington. "Better" Windisch decided to put the sword away and lead the Sox with three walks. All 10 players had at least 1 RBI and every player except J-Lay scored at least 1 run.
Novice pitching sensation Tanner Hodgson earned the win for the Burlington White Sox. The righty gave up five hits and two runs over four innings, striking out five and walking three. As a side note, Tanner can be heard for mile arounds the Millcroft area as he grunts through each and every pitch! Monica Seles would be so proud of this young padawan. He also takes almost as much time between pitches as he does to step in the batter's box! Fun facts! No ill-will here!
Zack Stylianou took the loss for the Burlington Chihuahuas. The starter went one and two-thirds innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits, striking out two and walking five. Zack clearly struggled with control during the outing leading to an uncharacteristic early exit.
Stylianou made up for his pitching woes with a solid effort at the plate. He went 2-2 with a hard hit double and an RBI to lead the Chihuahuas offense. Fader also "hit" well as the little dogs lead off hitter. He fouled off an incredible amount of pitches on his way to a 10 pitch first at bat and an 8 pitch second at bat. Both at bats ended in walks. He also has a stolen base off of the mighty Pallottini!
The Sox will travel (not far) to face the Burlington Bandits for their next game on Tuesday at Millcorft Park. A heavy schedule for the Sox in July will see a first look at the revamped Bandits and then followed up with a back-to-back series against the first place Hamilton Pirates. The latter back-to-back could determine who finishes on top of the standings for 2025! Matches against a very strong and beefed up Snipers squad and the hard hitting Dodgers will round out a very tough July schedule.
