Comedy of Errors Cost White Sox Game & Pedro's Arm!
The Burlington White Sox fell 6-5 to the Milton Dodgers on Sunday at Milton Sports Centre despite out-hitting them 12 to 9. The loss came largely from a horrifc display of infield fielding leading to 7 errors and 6 total unearned runs (of 6 scored by the Dodgers).
The Sox got on the board in the top of the 3rd inning to open the scoring. Cossitt Sr and the ODC hit back-to-back laser singles to show the young ones how it's done! Call up Brad Ellis stayed hot for the Sox and promptly doubled to center field to score SR. Toons cashed Dougie on a ground out. Hodgson singled to score Ellis and then after a single from Graham, Jack Moncur singled to score Tanner. When the dust settled, a 4-0 lead for Burlington.
Milton countered in the bottom of the 3rd as the Sox essentially gave 2 back. The inning started strong for the Dodgers as Espana and Mathe each singled. Then errors from Kretz and Moncur (and a fielders choice) plated 2 runs and a 4-2 score after 3 innings played.
The Dodgers added a run in the 4th as again they started strong with singles from Jones and Perez. Then an error from Graham would load the bases and a wild pitch would plate Jones.
Milton took the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning for good. Pedro came in to relieve an over worked Kretz and was greeted with back to back singles (AGAIN) from Gomes and Tiensovan. Pedro would K a tough hitter in Siracusa but then the inning would be undone as Ellis would make an error on a groundball to allow a run to score. This was followed up on the next batter with a great play by Windish at 3rd to snag a lineout from Jones but on the double off attempt the usually "Better" Windisch would throw the ball away to RF allowing all the base runners to move up and another run to score. Perez took complete advantage of the multiple gaffs and hit a triple to RF to score another and bring the score to 6-4 Dodgers.
The Sox would strike for a run in the 6th inning after a monster triple to RF from Hodgson and then a sharp single from Graham. Lay would walk but Burlington could not plate anymore runs and were left with a 6-5 score at the conclusion of the top of the 6th.
After a clutch 2 out single from Reco in the 7th he would promptly steal 2nd (and proceed to 3rd on the errant throw from the catcher Smorenburg), giving the White Sox hope to at least tie things up. That effort however was quickly extinguished as Espana would K Ellis to end the game and seal the win for the Dodgers!
KC Espana earned the win for Milton. Despite allowing 12 hits, KC minmized damage with great control and some timely strikeouts. In all he struke out 6 and walked 1.
Sean Kretz led things off on the bump for the Sox. The lefty allowed 6 hits and 3 runs (0 earned) over 4 innings, striking out 2 and walking 1. Kretzy left the game with the lead and did not factor in on the decision.
Dylan "Pedro" Grosul took the loss for Burlington. The reliever went 1 inning, giving up 3 runs (0 earned) on 3 hits, striking out 1 and walking 0. Unfortunately Pedro also exited the game prematurely with an injury. Hopefully nothing too serious. Fingers crossed!
Tanner Hodgson came in to relieve the injured Pedro and promptly struke out all 3 batters faced, fliritng with an immacculate inning in the process!
Burlington tallied 12 hits in the game. Hodgson, Graham, Pallottini, Moncur, and Ellis CU each drove in one run for the Sox.
Jones, Perez, and Luke Gomes each collected 2 hits for Milton. Brandon Tiensovan, Perez, Gomes, and Lee Mathe each drove in one run for the Dodgers.
Milton turned one double play in the game. Milton also only committed a single error in the field which was a major factor in the close win!
After many hours of groundball practice and IOs over the next 4 days, the Burlington White Sox will resume the season as they welcome the Campbellville Rockies (of Waterdown) on Thursday night at Millcroft Park.
