Mets Answer Gamblers Rally With Late Offensive Explosion
The Mets jumped out to a commanding lead, survived a furious Gamblers comeback and then pulled away with another offensive outburst in a 15 to 6 victory on July 22 at Riverside Field 5.
Dave Bodnar and Jeff Brokamp powered the Mets attack with two hits, three RBIs and two runs apiece. Brokamp delivered both a double and a triple. Joe Arnold added two hits, three RBIs and a game high three runs, while Marty Heckard contributed a two run double.
The Mets wasted no time taking control, storming out of the gate with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Gamblers scratched across a run in the second, but the Mets answered in the third to stretch their lead to 6 to 1.
Just when the game appeared to be slipping away, the Gamblers came roaring back. They erupted for four runs in the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to one and suddenly turning a comfortable Mets lead into a tense 6 to 5 contest.
The Mets responded before the Gamblers could build any more momentum. They struck for four runs in the bottom of the fourth, restoring a five run advantage and seizing control of the game once again. The Gamblers added another run in the fifth, but the Mets ended any hopes of a second comeback with a six run explosion in the sixth.
Mark Masavage led the Gamblers with two hits, including a double, two RBIs and two runs. Ron Davis collected three hits and drove in a run, while Keith Oehlman added two hits and two RBIs.
Brian Biggs settled the game down for the Mets after the Gamblers' rally, allowing only one run over three innings while striking out two. Dave Schultian opened the game with a scoreless inning and two strikeouts.
